  1. I think she did your dd a favor. When someone says "What the..." the F word is usually implied. I understand that your dd didn't know that and didn't intend to say that, but I think most people fill it in that way.
  2. I have 6 indoor cats. My oldest son is sure that I'm going to be an old cat lady someday with a whole houseful of cats. All but one of ours were shelter cats or strays.
  3. :grouphug: It sounds like she really loves ballet, but her physical issues will always make it difficult. Since she's not planning on dancing in college or professionally, would she consider going to a less rigorous dance school where the teaching might not be as good, but she'll get more opportunities? Or as the other poster said, would she try some other forms of dance? Her ballet background could make her really good in jazz. If she wants to stay at the current school and continue with ballet, you both need to sit down with the studio director and talk about her goals and options. I know it's hard to not be as good as you want at something you love (and twice as hard on Mom!), but she may need to just enjoy dancing and understand that she may never get those coveted parts.
  4. We don't buy or receive birthday gifts from our parents or anyone in our extended family. Birthdays are celebrated with immediate family here. We invite the grandparents to the children's birthdays but they don't bring gifts.
  5. I met a couple at church yesterday who are university professors. They teach Latin and ancient history and when the conversation turned to homeschooling, the woman told me that she has a homeschooled student in her class who is "doing very, very well because he's studied some of this stuff before" unlike most of the other students in her class. She said other complimentary things about the student and she attributed those traits to homeschooling.:001_smile:
  6. My husband told me last weekend that he had lost his job. He had worked at that place for over 10 years after going through a number of jobs. He works in a construction related field, so it's not a good time to lose his job. Oh, and the day before he lost the job, I signed a contract to allow my dd to join a dance team and we were already thinking about the expense of it. They didn't pay severance either, instead he's considered still employed and expected to resign and not take any money as soon as he gets a job.:glare:
  7. Well, I use both a weekly grid lesson plan and workboxes. I make my lesson plan for the week and then each evening I put the books, papers and supplies needed for each subject into a workbox. It works very well for me and I just have to open a workbox and pull out the books I need for that subject on that day. I never have to search my shelves for the proper book, find a pencil or tear out our math pages during our school time because they are already ready to go.
  8. Yes, we had a man who was very active in service organizations in our community who died from breast cancer.
  9. I also post on an infertility forum. One of the posters on that site said that her sister has breast cancer and just had a very bad appointment. She came home to find the breast cancer awareness message and it really, really upset her. She felt is was being silly about breast cancer and causing very real pain to those suffering from infertility as well. I don't participate in those kinds of things.
  10. I'm working on it. I got into the habit of late nights and late mornings. I know the day goes better when I start earlier, so I'm working on changing the sleep cycle.
  11. I lived in a neighborhood with a house that had a LOT of traffic on weekend nights. They were short term visitors too. It was a low income neighborhood and, at that time, we had the police trying a foot patrol in our area. I was out talking to my neighbor when the cop came by and we started talking to him. We casually mentioned the "drug house" and told him about all the traffic and quick visits we had and a few months later the house was raided. I agree with those who say you might want to call the non-emergency number and express your concerns that the neighbor may be dealing drugs. They may send someone undercover to try to buy or otherwise watch the house.
  12. Anytime (and any place) a child is getting math done without whining works for me!
  13. EVERY Cub Scout rank has a faith based requirement. We allow the parents to sign off when they feel their child has completed the requirements. There are RANK requirements and not just "badges".
  14. You neglected to mention that the Boy Scouts BUILT that headquarters building and then donated it to the city with the stipulation that they would get $1 rent in perpetuity.
  15. I will be my son's Bear den leader this year. If you and your dh can work together, I think it will be a great opportunity. I like being the den leader so I can make sure that my son has a good experience. Our Pack was very small and didn't have much leadership when we started. I now have the largest, most active den. I need to spend about an hour or two a week planning and getting supplies together for the den meetings. I spent much more time than that for the Pack because I also help my dh who is the Cubmaster. BTW, I think the previous Pack was wrong to insist on having your son be a Bear. It should be strictly grade based and, for homeschooled students, I allow the parent to choose whatever grade they consider appropriate for their child.
  16. Yes, my son is almost 9 and he flaps his "wings" and pretends to be a hummingbird. He's other animals on other days.
  17. Believe me, the adults WILL put them there and it won't be the Scout leaders. I'm just happy that our Cub Scout Pack has doubled in size in the past two years and we're having a great time. My daughter, however, will not be joining Girl Scouts. I guess she'll have to wait until she's 14 and can join the BSA Venturing program. (Maybe that's age discrimination?)
  18. Also, I don't think anyone brought up the point that Girl Scouts discriminate against MEN! Men are not allowed to be GS leaders, but women have been welcomed into all positions of Boy Scout leadership for many years.
  19. The problem is that Boy Scouts has some religious requirements. If you don't practice any religion, it's pretty hard to participate in the requirements. We have very religious families, UUs families and non church attending families in our Pack. We allow them to work on the religious requirements at home in their own way.
  20. Yes, I really like that they post grades online. My high school son has ADHD and can't remember his homework, whether he turned in his homework, where he left the homework that he actually did, well, you get the idea. I could ask him every day a thousand times about his school work and never get a thing out of him. He will tell me he did all his homework (he thinks), the teacher didn't give the test back yet (and we'll never see it when she does) and on and on. Even with online grades he'll say "But I turned that assignment in! Why do I have a zero?" only to find that it's still in his notebook. I don't have a clue what's going on in his classes without that and half the time I don't think he has a clue either.:glare:
  21. I had to laugh about what happened today. I read the thread about the cashier who insisted that homeschooled students start PS behind and today someone told me the opposite. I was at my preschool dd's gymnastic class and I had my school age son with me. One of the coaches asked if I homeschooled him and when I said I did she replied, "I've heard that when parents homeschool from the start and then send the kids to school in high school that kids are about two years ahead of the public schooled students!" Of course I agreed with her and told her about formerly homeschooled students I know who are now excelling in high school, but inside I was laughing.:001_smile:
  22.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system.
  23. I find this interesting. It's common in my area for children to be homeschooled until high school. I can think of numerous students that I know personally who went from homeschooling to being at the top of their class in public school. I live in a university community and I think most parents who homeschool do so for academic and social reasons. Most parents also have college degrees.
