  1. Dorothy, You can see exactly what my 6th grader is studying on my blog ( on the left sidebar.) I'll be soon putting up his daily schedule as well.
  2. Your book may have given you the translation of "am able" for possum. It also means "can." It gets tricky with multiple meanings of words.
  3. Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. Looks like I'm up and running now.
  4. Please help me out of my ignorance. How can I put documents on my blog for downloading? I've got all kinds of schedules and lesson plans that I'd love to share, but I have no idea HOW! I'm talking about Word or Wordperfect documents. TIA
  5. I just finally got my internet fully restored after Hurricane Gustav! After four weeks. Here is our Hurricane Recovery Homeschool Weekly Report (for the month of September). Link is in my signature.
  6. If that makes you a mean mom, then what am I? I tried to homeschool today--during the Hurricane  I was worried about how many days we might end up missing, and I wanted to do school while we still had electricty. Well, needless to say, I had to give it up. No one could concentrate with the howling wind outside. lol (still waiting for Gustav to bring it on!)
  7. Thanks for the well wishes. So far so good but the eye of the storm isn't here just yet. The waiting is awful! He's pro-breastfeeding, but thinks it is a matter of personal conscience. He has never instructed the women of our church to breastfeed, nor has he even implied that it is sinful *not* to breastfeed. As I said before, I am blessed with a pastor who never tries to bind our consciences. He is a firm believer in Christian liberty.
  8. Susie, Happy belated birthday. I know it stinks to have dh gone, but please know that all of us in LA are so grateful for the help of others. Hurricanes are tough. Having people willing to help to get us back to normal is crucial. Thanks from LA. (still waiting for Gustav to come and get me. Any minute now...)
  9. Great question. The oddest thing I've ever seen is a guy looking at p*rn while driving. Talk about creepy. He had the magazine on his steering wheel, and--well--was not looking at the road. I passed him quickly. Yuck Yuck Yuck.
  10. Wow. My pastor speaks about all three and I love him for it! The Bible speaks about all areas of our lives and I would desire and expect that my pastor would preach faithfully and apply Scripture to every area of life. I think the real crux here is "binding consciences". My pastor never does that. He preaches faithfully, but also understands that some issues, like breastfeeding for example, are issues for wisdom and personal conscience. He would say what he thinks the Biblical principles are, but he would never attempt to bind my conscience where God does not. It's not really a matter of what areas a pastor should or should not speak about, but rather how skillfully and wisely he does so. I wouldn't say that it is the "wise man" who steers clear of controversial topics, but rather the "wise man" who can speak about them without giving offense. ETA: if anyone was wondering. I'm distracting myself from this hurricane bearing down on me. The eye will be here in a few hours. In the meantime, the waiting is unbearable. I'm killing time until the electricity goes out.
  11. I'm right there with you! I'm killing time here to distract myself from the impending doom of Gustav. The eye is headed straight for us! It'll be an exciting week for sure. Prayers appreciated.
  12. So, I'm curious. Why are Presidential Candidates immune from satire by Pastors? If SNL can make a an entire genre of satirizing politicians, why can't Christian pastors be given the same liberty? Are you trying to limit their free speech?
  13. It's headed straight for me. We are riding it out, but it will be rough! Prayers greatly appreciated.
  14. Oh I love John Bunyan's poems for children. I especially like his Lessons from Nature: Poems for Boys and Girls.
  15. Oh yeah. Robert Spencer wrote the Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam.
  16. You must be just south of me. They haven't called for evacuation here yet (Lafayette Parish), but we are expecting the worst. We lost our roof and were out of power and water for a week during Lili. Gustav will likely be worse. Be safe. We're riding it out. Prayers appreciated greatly.
  17. I apologize to Jennifer if what I said came across as accusing her of "foul intentions." I honestly don't believe this is the case. What I do believe is that, all of us, unintentionally, bring to the table our own set of assumptions. These assumptions can cause us to misunderstand what someone else says. There's no big sinister plot, it's just human nature. I've been Reformed for 25 years and have been an intense student of its theology for much of that time. When I hear the comments being made, I can honestly see how someone could come to that conclusion--especially if they already thought that the Reformed church had a low view of missions and the Lost. But this has never been true of the Reformed church historically nor is it now. The truth is that I am more than happy to defend my position. I only feared that this particular forum--meaning bulletin boards rather than face to face or extended letters--would not be conducive to the kind of discussion that would be necessary. I've already been accused on this thread of taking offense because someone didn't agree with Reformed theology, which is not true. Those kinds of misunderstandings wouldn't happen face to face, and I was only trying to avoid fanning the flames. If there are specific questions, I am happy to answer, but I'm honestly not sure how to rebut general accusations like claiming that Reformed people have an arrogant attitude toward the Lost. That's obviously the conclusion she walked away with. I've read the same book and didn't draw that conclusion at all. One of the Omnibus books that she singled out as problematic was the essay on Genesis. It's available in its entirety on the Veritas website.
  18. Actually, Jennifer, that's not what I was referring to at all. My pastor confirmed again that the Presbyterian Church in Korea sends more missionaries than all the denominations in the United States combined! I'm bowing out of this conversation. You seem intent to misunderstand and misrepresent Reformed Theology with respect to their views of the Lost. I am greatly grieved by this, but clearly there is nothing I can do about it. As much as it depends on me, I'll be at peace with all men. All the best to you.
