  1. Would anyone like to share what they like best for LA? My top 2 choices are PLL or R&S 2. What are the big differences there? SWB recommends R&S in her old book, but why not PLL since it is similar to FLL? Don't remember if she mentions PLL and why or why not she likes it. Otherwise, FLL and CLE look good too.....:001_unsure: Also, are they complete besides spelling? I am planning on R&S spelling, but what about using WWE? Thanks! My head is spinning with all the choices out there and not being able to go to a store and stare at the book for awhile!
  2. What age were your children or child when they started TOG? Is it too much for a 7 yo and 5 yo (my school kids next year)? I have 4 kids who would eventually be in the cycle. Should I wait a bit--a long bit? I was going to try MFW Adv next year. But, TOG looks so great and sounds like what I want, too. I have been reading how rigorous it is, etc., but not sure if this is just for the older years. Not worth the investment right now?
  3. California is not as bad as some people make it sound. I moved from Michigan which has NOTHING to California which doesn't seem like a big deal. I have lots of friends in PA that say it is pretty strict there. I don't know about testing? Anyone from CA know about testing?

    MEP

:lurk5: I feel the same way! I know a lot of people use it, but seems like there is an easier way to figure out where everything is?
  5. I have read on this forum people mention that their son or daughter is at a 4th grade reading level, 3rd grade lever, etc., (but only in 1st grade, etc). How do you find this out? Can anyone recommend a reading level testing site? Thanks!
  6. So I am correct that there is no answer key online?
  7. Does MEP have answer keys? I cannot seem to find them if they do. The lesson plans don't seem to contain them that I have seen. Thanks.
  8. I have been wondering how exactly to use MEP, too. :bigear:
  9. You could browse through the books at RHB. It is a solid reformed publisher-don't know if that would be a good thing for you or not--but worth looking at. They have a devotional section for children. Also, character building, doctrine, etc., here. The Building on a Rock series looks good, too. I enjoy much of Dr. Beeke's writing and Diane Kleyn does nice work for children also. They could probably aid in showing samples of some of the books if you request it. I like to see things before buying, too.
  10. Oh, I see. Makes sense! I will look into it.
  11. How come you recommend this when you use CLE? Just curious. :001_smile:
  12. Thanks! That is what I wanted. What is your advice for adding it now? Get it all and skip through to finish by summer? Or just go with the last 5 hoping to get it all done by summer? Do you have the teacher's guide?
  13. I am looking to supplement a little bit for first grade Math. My daughter needs extra practice with adding, subtracting, etc. We have done basics with counting, money, time, etc. Would I be OK to just order the last 5 Light Units? Is there a list somewhere stating what each unit covers? I would like to pick and choose which ones. I get a little idea by the sample they have, but is there a "table of contents" listing what each unit covers? I know that I don't really need the first one, looks light learning to write each number. She does all that fine. Also, do you recommend I buy the teacher's manual? Is it needed for 1st grade? Thanks!
  14. I have been following this thread. I also thank you all for being so helpful! I am also wondering if any of you would use CLE and supplement with Singapore (or other way around...)? Thanks!
  15. My kids love, love, love this CD (amongst of a few others of Jamie's). My 4yo and 6yo know the books of the Bible from this song. It repeats the New Testament twice. Listen to a sample here. 16. :lurk5: I use MFW 1st and really love TWTM and what it has to say. So I am interested in responses here. I see in your signature all that you have added on with MFW 1st. Do you find it to be too much? Just enough? I feel like I am lacking something. I did buy FLL but haven't used it yet. I am slacking in science since we are kind of on our own right now--around day 80 or so. I really have been trying to make math work but was tempted to add Singapore.
  17. I feel the same way. I have my daughter in MFW 1st and just not doing that great. She actually cried the other day because she didn't want to do the Bible Notebook--and she is generally very compliant. I really think the issue is definitely more me that MFW. She has really done well learning to read. But I fear I am lacking in all other areas. We will see how it goes, with me making more of an effort that to just rush through it quickly, etc. I just really can't get the interest to do some of the activites, etc. That's all. Just glad I am not alone. Sonlight really interests me but I just can't seem to figure it out.
  18. My Father's World K is a good curriculum.
  19. Fairly new to the Los Angeles area. Can't seem to find fellow homeschoolers around here--I know you are out there!! ;)
  20. Just finished Little House in the Big Woods. On to Magician's Nephew (1st chronicles of narnia). :001_smile:
  21. Not 100% sure what you are looking for...but I had asked on this forum not too long ago for a website that I could buy lots of books new and/or used and pay one shipping price (versus 3.99 shipping for each book on amazon). Someone recommended betterworldbooks. FREE shipping! Woohoo. I just ordered about 15 books from them. They had every book I typed in, some new, some used, some in the bargain bin. My new favorite! I do like Rainbow Resource, too. :001_smile:
