You can PM me if you'd like, but I will say here that we had to switch to someone else for the second semester. I will start by saying that, on the positive side, Mrs. Donohue was pleasant, and she had some interesting assignments the first semester. That's pretty much where it ends. She took MONTHS (seriously, multiple months) to grade many of the assignments (her grading became slower over the course of the first semester to reach the point that she was months behind.) Even then, she rarely gave any constructive feedback - usually either none or just a vague sentence or two that could have been written on anyone's paper. There was more than one occasion that dd received remarks that didn't apply to her assignment. Mrs. Dohohue was pregnant with her second child at the beginning of the school year (due during second semester), but never told the parents or the students. Not saying she has to share her private life, but she actually emailed the students in March that she was on the way to labor and delivery, and that she had "neglected to tell them that she was pregnant." The course essentially ended then - she had nothing planned in advance, did nothing for many weeks, and did very little after that. By the time she did anything, it was too little too late. We had already switched to a tutor who is very good, and that I would highly recommend, Meredith Noah. Meredith used to be affiliated with Tom Richey of TomRichey.net, but not sure if she still is. She is a public school AP teacher who also tutors. She has been an AP exam reader, done AP workshops, and knows her stuff. She was very quick at tailoring the tutoring toward what my daughters needs were. She even invited dd to attend, via Skype, a couple of exam review days she had after school and on a Saturday with her public school students at no extra charge. DD ended up getting a 5 because of Meredith's help. If I was going to do AP Euro again, I would do the course at home using one of the traditional AP Euro textbooks, and then hire Meredith to tutor at three points during the year - beginning, middle, and end. If I had a child who had already taken APUSH or AP World, and therefore understood how to write the history essays, I would probably cut the tutoring down in the beginning and use most of it toward the end of the year. You can find syllabi all over the place for course pacing. I'm really surprised that Hannah Donohue is attempting to teach this course again. She often used her toddler as an excuse for why she didn't get back to students or why she hadn't graded papers or why she hadn't posted the week's work on time. The class was very small, I think starting at something like 15 with a couple dropping. Most of the other students had taken APUSH already, so were well prepared by Mrs. Richmond to write the type of essay required for AP history exams. For a student who didn't have that background, it was very difficult. (20 minutes with Meredith Noah, and dd totally got it.) Another bummer is that dd put the code for PAH on her exam, so Mrs. Donohue got credit for dd getting an 5. Additionally, it really is a course that could be passed by reading the textbook and doing a study guide (if you know how to do the essays). I know the students had PLENTY of time to do study guides before the exam... Who knows, maybe Mrs. Donohue will be better because she had all of this year to prepare the entire year's assignments, so she is ready to go. (I would be willing to bet she was putting it together on the fly as the year went on, during the year dd took her class.) As I said, she did have some interesting assignments the first semester, and she is a pleasant person. And maybe Mrs. Richman will help her out, as Mrs. Donohue was a graduate of PAH courses herself. PAH had (still has- website is to update soon) Mr. Steele listed as the Instructor for 2017-18. He is not going to be teaching the course and instead, she is. So, she didn't necessarily have the year to prepare. My son has never taken an AP history course (i.e. can't rely on APUSH as back-up experience); this course is monumentally expensive for our family; he needs to be in the best position to earn a 5 possible; he loves history and I want him to have a good experience; he will be a senior and we have enough stress! do not need to add an unorganized asynchronous class to the mix; - I need to make the best decision I can. Thank you so much for the info!! We are using Maya also next year and I felt so comfortable with that choice because of all the reviews; her many years teaching; her track record- aka student scores; the overall tone of her listing; and!! her wonderful responsiveness to emails and my son's application. We also bought the Crash Course study guide and didn't find it very worthwhile. I don't think any of the study guides would be able to prepare your son for the essay, at least not like a teacher who knows what she/he is doing. He really needs to have someone grading and giving feedback who is experienced with those essays. Maya Inspektor is wonderful. DD had her for AP Lang and AP Lit and loved those classes. I agree with your assessment of her 100%. Is he not doing APUSH because he already has his US History credit and still needs the world/European credit? APUSH with Mrs. Richman is very, very good. DD definitely felt like she got a 5 after she took the exam a few weeks ago. Plus Mrs. Richman is so genuinely enthusiastic. I'm not sure how to advise you on AP Euro. Meredith is kind of expensive. She had it set up to buy packages by a certain number of hours. I think she should do a special package for homeschoolers in which she provides a syllabus for self-study pacing, has a certain number of tutoring hours, and will grade and give feedback a certain number of essays. You know, I think I will email her and suggest it. :) Maybe someone else on this forum has taken it from another provider? He has fulfilled his graduation requirements and then some. I will speak to him about this! At this time, he is considering History as his intended major- and AP truly felt like the next step for him. I showed him the courses and he wanted to take European History. We checked if his selected school accepted it and they do- so we went from there! Thank you so much for the details and the BTDT experience and advice. pinkelement Posted May 1, 2018 Share Posted May 1, 2018 So tempted. What makes me hesitate is that it will be adding a 3rd AP course to my dd's schedule next year. Has anyone taken this course? How many hours of work per week does it really take? I saw in FAQ 10-15 hours? Our experience has been that the hours stated are usually slightly inflated.
