Dmmetler
That we don't need to test every year? The grade level standardized testing locally is the week of DD's college final. The ACT and SAT May dates both hit other commitments (cheer, piano recital, etc). June we could do the SAT, but honestly, we both just want to be DONE at this point. Last year, she had DA to push her through to that June date. This year, it's just to get a test for the file. She's already got scores good enough to qualify for anything she wants to do as far as Talent search and local DE goes. If she wants to go to high school for 9th, she'd need to test in 8th anyway... It seems a no-brainer, but I'm having a really hard time letting go of that outside validation.
Arcadia
If you don't need to test to fulfill an umbrella school or a state requirements, just skip this year. My DS12 is skipping standardized testing this year but we have no requirements to test at all. Edited April 4, 2017 by Arcadia
regentrude
Unless you need to test to fulfill a state requirement., I see no purpose in yearly tests. I have never done yearly tests; DD took the SAT in 7th, and then did her round of college application testing in 10th/11th. DS only ever took one test, the ACT in 11th grade. Tanaqui
While I don't think that yearly tests are necessarily purposeless or useless, skipping one year is not likely to be the end of the world... especially in your child's case. What validation do you need to prove to yourself that she's working well above grade level that you can't already get by the fact that she's working well above grade level? On that note, Neatorama's been on a snake kick lately, and every time they post a new link about snakes I think of your daughter. She's probably seen these two links, but if she hasn't, I sure thought they were nifty!
katilac
The first standardized test my kids take is the ACT in 11th-grade. It will be fine.

It seems a no-brainer, but I'm having a really hard time letting go of that outside validation. I'd consider college to be outside validation. And, as a side note, college students and adults don't tend to take standardized tests - the last time I took a standardized test was 12 years ago. So, just pretend that not taking the test is a test-run for being a grown-up/college student. ;)
Runningmom80
This will be our 3rd year not testing. I even paid for a SCAT and then skipped it because I realized I had scheduled it in a moment of panic and it's not worth the anxiety it would cause my kid. You don't need to test every year. ;)

luuknam
People take the SAT in middle school now? People have been taking the SAT in middle school for decades. My wife took it in middle school and she's 40.

Dmmetler
The SAT and ACT are used to qualify for some summer programs and online classes (mostly those designed for the top 5% or less), as well as for early college access.
HTRMom
Interesting! I never took that until eleventh grade. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
