Periodic table of elements games/fun?

Recommended Posts

DS6 is having more fun with the periodic table of elements than I anticipated. So, I thought if there's a game or fun resource I'd like to take advantage of his interest. Any thoughts? I did check apps but most looked blah, but I didn't do extensive research.

We have seen the documentary hunting for the elements which he really liked. We are doing RSO chemistry currently.

For something fun, I highly recommend the videos/songs done by Peter Weatherall. He puts together all sorts of extremely detailed math and science videos and songs. No fluff in his math and science:). Not to mention very affordable. I think you can buy all of the math and science series for about $20!

The chemistry set is pretty good, and fun. The human biology one is awesome too:) I have a video of my then 3 yo singing a catchy tune about red blood cells: 'oh, a red blood cell is a tiny disc, with a dent in the center! With heemogwobin near the suwface so oxygen can easily leave or enter!!'

You can also find many of his videos on YouTube:)

I second Periodic Table of Videos. Also pHET simulations and the Dynamic periodic table website, and a Molymod molecular modeling kit to build compounds. Last year at 5 and 6 yrs old, my kid spent 9 months with these tools, and taught himself so much chemistry that few adults he encountered knew more. And he couldn't even read. It was quite impressive what those tools can do. You can compare properties of all the elements with the ptable site, build molecules and test out if they're real, go to their wikipedia articles, and on and on.

Is he ready to learn some simple models for covalent and ionic bonding? Then, he might enjoy the challenge of learning some formulae for polyatomic ions - balancing equations can make for some fun little puzzlers.

My 6yo son is in love with Basher's The Complete Periodic Table. Read it 30 times in the last month.

He also likes playing this app from Toca Boca.

+1 on the NOVA Elements app

The Elements app is visually stunning, but pricey.

Thanks for more ideas! I knew this would be the right place. We haven't gotten to formal bonds yet, but the foundations are being laid with electrons and atoms joining to make molecules. But chemical bonds with elements would be next and there are more resources for that from my brief perusal.

Whoa...if anyone is following this thread. Touchpress put their apps on sale 80% off. I scooped up Molecules for $2.99, Elements in Action for $0.99. That expensive Elements app I have is $2.99 right now.

Bumping because of this. I had the science apps, but got others. The price reductions are substantially. The original price for Elements was about $13.99 I think.
