Hewitt's Conceptual Physics resources

Recommended Posts

Since Conceptual Physics (I'm going to shorten that to CP from now on) gets recommended so often, I thought it might be nice for it to have its own thread with a self-explanatory title. That way, if folks are searching, it's easier to find. I did a search but couldn't find a master thread so hopefully this doesn't already exist. smile.gif Please feel free to add on to the thread!

*Lori D. gave a link to CP videos online which, if they're the same as the ones offered for sale on ArborSci, are a FANTASTIC deal!!! (...considering that both ArborSci and Amazon want $1200 for the DVD set - gack!)

I've only searched the past year and I know I've missed tons. My apologies if I've missed anyone's contributions to the Hive's collective wisdom - it wasn't intentional!

(Pssst... Can anyone tell me how to post links so that a description shows up (but is still a live link) instead of the full web address? I'd love to be able to do that. smile.gif)

Just wanted to add that the Georgia Public Broadcast videos on physics work very well with this course and are easy to match up :) They have note taking and worksheet print-ables as well(and are free....).

I don't know how or where I found it last spring, so I can't post a link, but if it isn't already in one of the threads listed, I have the PDF file for the Student Lab Manual - it can all be printed or printed as needed. I don't think there are any copyright issues as I just got it easily off a Google search....

If anyone would like a copy, just email me :)

Thank you, Connie! I was just sitting down to plan out our physics for next year.

I do have a question for the experienced physics people out there: how did you handle the review questions and exercises? Do you do all the review questions? How do you choose which exercises to answer?

What is the best high school Physics text/curriculum for grade 12? My ds is taking ALG 2 this year and will take trig in grade 12. I need something self explanatory as I have ZERO physics experience! He desires to attend college to become a mechanical engineer. I was considering CP but was concerned b/c others said that it did not include alot of math. Any opinions on this subject?

I've been self-educating with the electromagnetics chapters in Young & Geller's "College Physics" as a way to help my kids with Science Olympiad. It is quite a bit more challenging than "Conceptual Physics" but easier than Giancoli's "Physics for Scientists and Engineers" (which is calculus-based). I started with CP and am going to attempt to work my way up to the Giancoli.

...and where can I find the answers to check his work for practice problems and review question? Will they sell the parent the instructor book? I know NOTHING about Physics!

ETA: Forgive my nerdish excitement, but this is an amazing resource!! I am getting more excited as I dig into this. These slides were evidently produced by Pearson. They are engaging, colorful, so nicely done. There are assessment questions at the end of each presentation, with just the question and multiple choice answers on one slide, and the answer on the next. It appears that each chapter has over 100 slides. These presentations were obviously made to be used in a class setting, but I can see using them with individual students as well.

If those are the instructor slides produced by Pearson,  I am pretty sure that the teacher is NOT permitted to put those slides on a publicly accessible website.

Sorry --- in my excitement, I didn't even think of that. I have removed the link from my post so that I don't compound the problem.

For an Engineering major he probably should have some calculus before attending a 4 year school.  You should consider having your son takes some community college classes (Calculus and Physics) to ensure that he can handle the math before spending a lot of money at the 4 year.  Does he think math is "fairly easy"?

For now,  go the CP route in Physics.

Math is primary for most STEM fields.  I have one is leaning towards engineering and is a little behind in math (Alg I in 9th, Alg II in 10, Geometry in 11th now), and we're going to do CP so that I can load them up on math during their senior year.  They have several AP classes this year, and this isn't the time. I'd really like to get in some calculus.  To me, physics is secondary to the need to get more math in, so we're going lighter with 12th grade physics.

FWIW, when I was in high school, my physicist father wanted me to focus on AP Calculus and take calculus-based physics in college.  So I took AP Biology my senior year.

I do think that there's also merit in doing something like CP for the overview though, and mine wants some physics.  We did integrated physics/chemistry for 9th and really enjoyed that.
