Fargo Flood

Recommended Posts

I'm up here in the Red River valley and the river is flooding AGAIN. Fargo has made 2.5 million sandbags in five days. Three colleges and all ps are closed so that volunteers can make sandbags.

Yesterday, they raised the crest prediction AGAIN. Within an hour, my neighborhood looked like a war zone with Red Cross and Salvation Army trucks bringing in food, hundreds of volunteers throwing sandbags, firemen directing the building of dikes, and national guard trucks blocking roads. It was truly insane and awe-inspiring simultaneously.

We started building dikes on Saturday and have them to 41 feet (measured form the river bed) by Tuesday. At noon on Wednesday, the river observers raised the crest and the dikes had to go up two feet more! And for every foot up you go, you have to go TWO feet wider at the base and build up!

Hundreds of college students and fire departments from 200 miles away showed up to hurl 30-40 pound sandbags.

All of this, yesterday, was done in a snow storm, with wind and temps in the 20's! ONLY in ND and MN can you have a flood and a blizzard at the same time.

We covet your prayers. People are going to lose their homes (like Grand Forks did in 1997). We are very near the river--across the street from it.

My kids cheerfully offered to leave their school books behind so that we could pack more stuff in the van for evacuation--they little darlings!

Thank you for your prayers! It's been a truly incredible five days up here in the great northern plains.

I'm a little farther north of you, and we're getting half-hourly updates on you guys. Look for some busloads of Canucks from the Mennonite Central Committee -- seriously -- they're sending a few busloads of volunteers your way.

Hang in there...
