Drama Llama
My smallish white dog pushed something under a bicycle and got bicycle grease from the chain all over his face. How do I get it off? My son suggested trying Dawn like he is a bird in an oil spill, but will that sting his eyes?
ScoutTN
Poor pup! I’d start with dog shampoo and see if it works. Dawn sounds like a good idea, but maybe just a little on a rag that you carefully use to scrub the grease spots. EKS
Vegetable oil will get things like tar and tree sap off of skin. You could try that followed by shampoo or Dawn if those things by themselves don't work. Edited November 7, 2023 by EKS
Katy
Any shampoo will probably hurt eyes, Dawn even more. But I’d start with baby shampoo (which can still burn eyes, ask me how I know), but it’s the mildest option. I’d probably use Dawn if baby shampoo doesn’t work, but be careful around eyes
Pawz4me
If you have any eye gel--something like Refresh PM or similar--that will provide a little bit of eye protection if you apply it right before bathing.
Jaybee
Anybody else here thinking we need a picture? Poor pup. I'd do as a pp suggested and rub in some oil first. It sounds counter productive and will leave his hair greasier for a bit, but it might dilute the thick stuff and make it easier to wash out. MercyA
I'd get as much off as I could with a dry paper towel first. Then I would use dog or baby shampoo. Then I would use Dawn carefully if necessary. Once a cat showed up at my house absolutely covered in motor oil. I took her to a cat clinic and they bathed her about 8 times with Dawn.
