prairiewindmomma
What you describe (just doing close vision work) doesn't explain hurting eyes. Honestly, it'd be best if you could get him to an opthamologist. If you can't, I would be doing cold water eye compresses a few times a day in the hopes that it either: reduces eye strain, reduces swelling (from allergies), or loosens any debris that might be in his eye. Hurting eyes at our house have been corneal abrasions, allergic reactions (keratoconjunctivitis) or infections.
Laurie
I don't know if this would help your son but there are some free eye exercises for children at eyecanlearn dot com I'm sorry that you're not able to go outside! That's really hard!
saraha
Our teenage daughter (right before lockdowns) started complaining that her eyes hurt after reading, doing crafts etc so we took her to optometrist thinking she needed glasses. Turns out, she didn't need glasses, she doesn't shut her eyes all the way when she blinks and as you blink less when looking at screens or close work, it was actually her eyes drying out! She was very happy not to need glasses or anything and some over the counter lubricant drops did the trick.

Sherry in OH
He may have dry eyes. Try saline solution or unmedicated liquid tears a few times a day. Looking at distant objects periodically is good, but he also needs to be reminded to blink. You could also have him close his eyes for a minute or two between tasks. If your home is very dry, a humidifier might help.
Pen
See if he can imagine points at various far distances and focus on the imaginary far item even though he can’t actually see it (a dog, a medium far tree, bird, helicopter, airplane, a farther tree, a mountain with snow...) ... Also try palming and just resting eyes closed... maybe listening to audio or music and doing things that even if close up are not reading or online... dancing, building with blocks, cooking... Make sure he’s well hydrated (if you have something delicious that could help—lemonade perhaps), well nourished, including things like magnesium (maybe an Epsom salt bath).
Pen
Try to find out if hurting is from a surface pain (like dry or scratched or grit), or a muscle type pain, or a deeper pain like a headache behind eyes.
