SA Homeschooler 231 Report post Posted Wednesday at 03:44 PM How hard would it be to succeed at Matrices and Linear Alg prior to taking Calc 3? DS has done well in Calc 1 and 2 but wants to postpone Calc 3 and take Linear Alg instead; this concerns me because it is not the usual progression but I thought I'd ask the hive. Thank you for your help. 😀
Kassia 4,736 Report post Posted Wednesday at 03:50 PM My daughter just finished Linear Algebra with no problems without taking Calc 3. My older son also took Linear Algebra without Calc 3. They both did very well.
SA Homeschooler 231 Report post Posted Wednesday at 03:55 PM Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease! The professor teaching Calc 3 gets low score on ratemyprofessor.com so my kiddo wants to wait for a different professor; the professor for Linear Alg gets a much better rating. 😃
RootAnn 11,335 Report post Posted Wednesday at 05:53 PM (edited) If you want to read some opinions on order of classes after Calc 2, this makes an interesting thread. Some colleges, obviously, design their schedules to require Lin Algebra before multivariable calc. ... which I had never heard of before that thread! Calming Tea 5,740 Report post Posted Wednesday at 07:40 PM My son is supposed to take all 3 together first semester of sophomore year so, I would imagine it's ok.
regentrude 77,535 Report post Posted Wednesday at 07:53 PM I can't see any reason why you would need calc 3 for linear algebra.
kokotg 1,098 Report post Posted Wednesday at 07:57 PM (edited) DS took linear algebra (and a proofs class that I guess you could call discrete math?) DE before calc 3. Did very well in linear algebra and is doing well in calc 3 now (freshman year at college). It's not an unusual sequence.
