happynurse
Has anyone used History Pockets: Ancient Civilizations (see link below) with SOTW 1 for a first grader? Thoughts/opinions on it? Thanks! https://www.amazon.com/History-Pockets-Ancient-Civilizations-Grades/dp/1557999007/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Edited February 10, 2018 by happynurse
Stibalfamily
We are doing this, we use what we want but have to skip the writing and words to know portions. We mainly use the coloring pages. We have a teacher file box subscription because I hate photocopying and I wanted all of the History pockets. I consider it a great deal. mamaraby
We used it. I turned it into a lapbook instead of a pocket and I did the writing for the younger ones.
YodaGirl
Yes! I love them, as do the kids. The only problem I have is follow-through. It's one of our "extras," so it tends to be the first to get dropped. My 1st grader will ask to do them, though. My oldest wasn't as thrilled with history pockets when she was in 1st, though. ETA I just saw the SOTW part. I haven't used it, so I can't vouch for how well they'd work together. nixpix5
We did it with SOTW 1 but were inconsistent. Still, the ones we did the kids loved.
SilverMoon
If you like crafty lapbook-ish stuff it's fine for that age. :) If you're allergic to lapbooks you won't like History Pockets.
KrissiK
We used it. I turned it into a lapbook instead of a pocket and I did the writing for the younger ones. This is how i’ve Used them. I don’t use the books as they intend them to, but they are fun supplements sometimes.
Seeking Squirrels
We use them with HO ancients. My 9yo loves them but she has always loved lapbooks and anything along those lines. 5yo does some of the coloring pages and makes the puppets but she's just tagging along so I let her pick and choose what she wants to do. I don't know that they really add anything content-wise, but since the kids like them, it does make history something more enjoyable for them. Which can be just as important and worth the extra minutes to do.
HomeAgain
If your kids like coloring they'll like them. For us, it is overwhelming. The only good use I have found for history pockets is when you have a class to divide the work between and create a book together. Or spending a lot more time on each sub-topic.

Ann.without.an.e
Really dig deep and ask yourself if you like to do this sort of thing. They are super cool, but I just can't ever fit them in. You want to know a funny, true story? I bought them for my older three when they were in the history cycle and we never did them. I sold them and then purchased them again for youngest, thinking surely since we can do them this time. Guess what? We haven't touched it all year :svengo: I am still telling myself we will get to them this summer  Edited February 10, 2018 by Attolia
fralala
I'd say that if your kids are the kind who want more coloring/labeling-type activities than the SOTW activity book provides, this is a fantastic resource. In terms of providing additional content or learning experiences, it wasn't so valuable to my own kids who love reading (and being read to), but would rather come up with their own drawings and crafts. (In other words, it's still sitting on the shelf virtually untouched just in case the youngest ones turn out to love it.)
