  1. I am finally getting 7th grade sorted out. It looks like it's going to be... Saxon 8/7 Uncle Sam and You - Notgrass BJU Life Science Fix It Grammar - Mowgli and Shere Khan Jump In writing Mosdos Press Literature - Jade Vocabulary Cartoons Spelling Power (maybe) Fallacy Detective Something for financial literacy?? *He will continue with piano and run track in the summer.
  2. My youngest will be in 2nd next year. 😥 This is subject to change, but I'm leaning toward: CLE Math 200 Abeka Phonics & Language 2 BJU Spelling 2 BJU Reading 2 Abeka Handwriting 2 or Pentime Transition My Father's World Adventures in US History (includes Bible, History and Science) *I have most, if not all, of this on my shelf. She plays soccer and does track in the summer.
  3. I'm looking for middle school science recommendations, preferably ones with video or online teaching options. This would be for my rising 7th grader (who I have kind of dropped the ball on science with. ) I looked at BJU, but their video option is kind of pricey for just one course. Recommendations are appreciated!
  4. Hi, everyone. My third grade son went to school for K and 1st. He was always considered advanced by his teachers, but since bringing him home I've noticed his spelling abilities are below average. Right now he is using Abeka Spelling 3, and he is fantastic at memorizing lists and acing spelling tests. However, when needing to spell on his own accord, he asks me how to spell the most basic of words (today was 'sort of'). We use Explode the Code in addition to Abeka's language arts, but is there something else that may help reinforce phonics and improve spelling? Would this be a situation where Spelling You See may help? My oldest used Logic of English and is a great, perhaps natural speller. This is new territory for me. Thanks!

  7. I used Science in the Beginning last year and purchased the lab kit that goes along with it (Nature's Workshop, I think?). It was very hands on and we enjoyed it.
  8. My kids are in 6th, 3rd and 1st grades. I've come to the realization recently that most kids my kids' ages (or at least my oldest's age) are quite adept at using technology. I don't mean Nintendo and iPads, but using laptops for assignments, communication with teachers, etc. We don't do any of that. We've just begun learning to type. I'm definitely a late adopter when it comes to tech (I'd write checks and drive to the post office every day if I had to 😄), and I really hate society's dependence on screens for survival. That being said, if my kids ever went to a b&m school, I'm afraid they'd be a little behind because of the high-tech aspect. Has anyone had experience with this? Did your child pick up on the modern technology when he/she had to? Did you teach it in some way? I'd love advice and thoughts. Thanks!
  9. My oldest is going into 6th. 🥺 Here is what we have lined up: Math: Saxon 7/6 LA: BJU English 6 (mostly for the writing instruction), Fix-It Robin Hood, BJU Spelling 6, Pentime 6, Redefining School World Literature Science: Apologia Earth Science History: Middle Ages using Human Odyssey vol. 1 and listening in on SOTW 2 with siblings We also do a weekly homeschool enrichment program that teaches Spanish, PE, Art, Music and fun science-y stuff piano lessons, typing.com, track ETA: I am adding in Abeka's 6th grade health curriculum and he wants to learn sign language, so looking for a resource for that.
  10. Where is your favorite place to sell your used curriculum? My oldest will be a 6th grader and I have accumulated quite a lot. 🫣 While I have purchased curriculum online, I've never sold online before. Any tips? Any places to sell that you have success with? This is intimidating my ADHD brain. Please and thank you!
  11. Thank you! You don't happen to have those spreadsheets anymore, by chance? 😅
  12. Next year I will have a 6th grader, 3rd grader and 1st grader homeschooling. I am planning to do SOTW 2 with everyone together, but have been looking for a way to "beef up" the material for my oldest. (Is this even necessary? He's very bright, but still quite immature and doesn't love school.) I found a cheap used copy of Human Odyssey vol. 1 and wondered if anyone has found a successful way to merge the two curricula for an older student? Thanks!
  13. This is becoming my 5th grade son. He goes to an enrichment program 1 day/wk, has church and has friends over fairly often, but still craves more social time. We live on acreage in the country, so it is not as easy as I wish it was. I'm considering school for him down the road. I sometimes wish "socialization" wasn't such a taboo word in the hs community. 😕 If I were the OP, I would strongly consider whether your child would thrive in that environment. If so, and if money is doable, I see no reason not to give it a try. Worst case, you leave and return to homeschool.
  14. My first grader (and baby!) will be doing: Horizons Math 1 Abeka Letters and Sounds 1 Abeka Spelling and Poetry 1 Pentime 1 BJU Heritage Studies 1 TGTB Science Units with older bothers: Reptiles, Amphibians and Fish, Mammals, Birds, and Botany I also have Memoria Press first grade Enrichment, if I can get to it. She will also go 1x per week to a homeschool enrichment program that teaches art, music, PE, STEM, Social Studies and Spanish.
  15. My upcoming 3rd grader will be doing the following: Horizons Math 3 Abeka Language 3 and Reading 3 Abeka Spelling 3 BJU Handwriting 3 (I'm not a fan of this font, but he really likes it) All Things Fun and Fascinating (IEW) BJU Heritage Studies 3, SOTW 2 as a morning basket read aloud TGTB Science Units: Amphibians, Reptiles & Fish, Mammals, Birds and Botany I also have an Analogies for Critical Thinking Grade 3 book and Eplode the Code 3 that he'll work through. He attends a homeschool enrichment program 1x per week that teaches Art, Music, PE, Social Studies, STEM and Spanish.
  16. Hello! Can anyone give me thoughts/opinions/experiences with Jump In writing curriculum? Background: This would be for next year for my son who will be in 6th grade. We tried IEW 1A with the DVDs this year and only made it to about week 6. This kiddo has ADHD and Mr. Pudewa's long video lessons were killing him. Also, he ended up trying to rewrite the story almost verbatim to Mr. Pudewa's original piece, despite my efforts to teach him to put his own spin on it. He is very artistic and actually enjoys writing creatively, but needs training on the structure and mechanics of formal writing. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you!
  17. Just curious what, if anything, you've already changed in your homeschool this year? For history we have already dropped MFW Creation to the Greeks in favor of Notgrass Adam to Us. Textbooks just get done in my house. 😄 The only part of MFW we kept was Science in the Beginning. We also dropped TGTB LA 5 and returned to CLE 500 for language Arts. Anyone else make big (or not so big) changes or am I the only crazy one? 😜
  18. MFW Creation to the Greeks is proving to be a bust around here. I hate the book hopping, we're bored, and most days it feels like we just read a Bible story with very little additional history tied in. I'm not sure if I'm missing something or if it gets better, but I'm an inch away from dropping it. I've added SOTW 1, but even then we're finding history dull. Not to mention my 2nd grader and K'er aren't remotely engaged and are a huge distraction. Can anyone advise? Last year we did Notgrass' Our Star Spangled Story and I loved that we just got history done and ticked the box. I don't know if I should just drop MFW completely (except for Science in the Beginning - we're loving that), and keep SOTW or just move on to another American history curriculum, like Notgrass. Ugh. My 5th grader has ADHD (as do I) and streamlined seems to work best for us. Thanks in advance for your help.
  19. Well I guess that answers that! 😄 I'll just leave 5/4 and the mom guilt behind.
  20. My upcoming 5th grader used Saxon 5/4 last year for 4th grade. However, we only got to around lesson 105 or so before we closed the books and called it summer. 🙂 We are starting school next week and I'm trying to decide if I should go back and finish 5/4 or just go ahead and start 6/5. From what I can tell, it looks like the material we didn't get to in 5/4 is covered in 6/5, but it is ordered slightly differently. Does anyone have experience or advice on which course of action to take? I like that 6/5 would start gently, whereas picking 5/4 up where we left off puts him in a more challenging spot in the book, so there would be no extra scaffolding there (which he would appreciate after summer break!) I'd love to hear your advice. Thank you! BTW: He's a fairly good math student but doesn't enjoy it (any programs we've tried) and definitely has ADHD.
  21. Has anyone managed to use SOTW 1 alongside MFW CtG? Or use SOTW 1 in place of Streams of Civilization scheduled in CtG? I have both, and I'd like to keep Bible, science, and some other components of CtG, but I think I'd prefer SOTW and it's AG in lieu of SoC. Really any advice or experiences would be helpful. Looking at it at the moment is quite overwhelming. Thank you!
  22. Any good, easy-to-implement resources to help explain and solidify fractions, decimals, and percents? This would be for a 4th grader doing Saxon 5/4 who is a bit math resistant. Thanks!
  23. @bluemongooseThis is a very similar LA lineup to what I'm considering next year. Have you done this workload before? Is it pretty doable?
  24. Yeah I'm concerned with bogging him down because he does have ADHD (like his mother) and can burn out quickly. That's definitely why I need help streamlining. He is ahead of CLE's spelling. I don't know if he's a natural speller, but certainly average to above average...he's a very visual learner, so once he sees spelling words they usually stick. As for penmanship, we started Pentime 1 in kindergarten, so we've just stuck with it. TGTB is a conundrum for me. He needs a very tight spiral for retention of grammar, and TGTB doesn't offer that for him. My thought is that it adds a little color and "pizzazz" to an otherwise black and white language arts package. I can make a case for any one of these programs, but if I stuck with all of them it would be too much. 😒
  25. You know, I wondered about this. We've never used any IEW products before, and when looking through it I thought of these concerns that you expressed. For that reason I thought it might be better suited as a supplement (it looks quick enough to complete) but I have a hard time imagining letting go of another program. Thank you for your feedback!
