Buying or making a mortar board for a cat?

You read that right.  I need a mortar board for our 17yo cat.  "Butler" is the last of the pair of cats our kids grew up with. I have a wonderful photo from our first year of homeschooling with both boys in sleeping bags in front of the fire and each boy has a book and a cat.

Butler has Stage 3 Chronic Renal Failure and we are giving him SQ fluids every third day. He still spends all of the school day trying to climb on top of Sailor Dude's school work and get his attention.  Sailor Dude has expressed more than once that he hopes Butler holds out until graduation in June. I had jokingly said that we would pose boy and cat together with their mortar boards on that day.  I don't think Butler is going to make it five more months and was thinking maybe I should try and locate that mortar board and at least get a picture of Butler in the cap.  He has been a huge part of ds's homeschool experience and we swear he knows the difference between people just having a conversation and when there is a read aloud, for which he must be present.

Any idea where I can get one or how to make one? My initial search found one on Etsy, but it had been sold.

It's really easy to make a mortarboard with an upside down styrofoam bowl and a square of cardboard or cardstock.  Attach with a brad.  (to each other, not the cat)

Good luck on the cat appreciating your efforts.

Just after I posted, our vet called with the results from the blood work we had done last night. Butler has moved from Stage 3 to Stage 4, so five months out is a no go. While I love all the ideas I've seen, I think I'll run with this one since I probably don't have much time. Sailor Dude will be using his brother's navy gown and cap, but has changed the colors to navy, white, and what else, but pool blue.  I think I will make Butler's mortar board white, which should look good with his "tuxedo." Maybe a Styrofoam cup base will work better for the cap part?

I have no idea if he will appreciate the effort. :tongue_smilie:  He's rather shy and compliant. I hope I can get it to work.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear your latest news. Some cats are truly special, and Butler sounds like one of those.
