yucabird
I am ignorant of taxi practices in NY.... Can one catch a flat-rate taxi at JFK to Times Square? If so, what would be the charge? (I'm also assuming a tip should be included....if so, what is the correct amount/percentage?) Thanks!
displace
It's a flat rate to get in one, plus X amount per mile (or X minutes idling). The rates are set so you could google then, find out approximate distances, then know approximate costs. Idk if there's a separate flat rate offered but I suspect you'd have to do an airport van ride thing to do that. It's been a while so maybe others know. I always took the subway. Much cheaper. :) Eta - tips for taxis are probably from total cost % but idk
itsheresomewhere
Another option is Uber. Last I heard from a few friends, Uber was cheaper and they thought it was a good choice.
madteaparty
It's not a flat rate, it will depend on traffic. There are vans that go to jfk and Laguardia (and back, presumably) but they leave from Grand central area, last I used one. Those are a flat fee.
Robin M
If you are on a strict budget, another option for going to Time Square is find a hotel close to it that has a shuttle to/from the airport. They are free. The taxi rate varies by traffic and which route they decide to take to get to your destination.

Jan in SC
A cab from JFK to Times Square is probably between $50 and $60 dollars. I don't know about flat rate cabs, but you can hire drivers for a flat rate. It will cost between $90-$130(ish) depending on the number of people in your party.
zoobie
Yellow Cabs have flat rates governed by NYC laws: http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtmlThe line can be long-ish because it's not always worth the taxi driver's time to do flat rate runs. We've also taken a public bus (took forever), a van service that dumped us at Penn Station and never provided the promised transfer, and a car service when we went with kids (preferred, found on yelp).
