hornblower
If you attend a funeral where there is a service with a celebrant, and immediately after, a small reception on site, with finger food & coffee/tea..... would you still expect the family to congregate at a home & be open to guests (ie a small 2nd reception?).In this case 2 siblings (+ spouses & kids) are, after the reception at the funeral home, taking the widow to one of their homes for a tea, & possibly a light supper to let her unwind before going home. What are the odds that the other extended family members will want to come to this event too?
Carol in Cal.
I would expect a second event, but by invitation only.

Ethel Mertz
Ditto to 2nd gathering (often more informal), by invitation only. If others don't know about it, they won't come,
Jean in Newcastle
Ditto to 2nd gathering (often more informal), by invitation only. If others don't know about it, they won't come, I agree about not telling others esp. if the main purpose is for the widow's comfort. But if the widow would be comforted by some select people coming, then I would invite them.
QueenCat
I'd expect it for anyone that had come from out of town, and was probably going to be spending another night in the area.
