lovinmomma
I've been having DD10 choose, plan, shop for, and make one recipe per week as part of her homeschool day. I then help her compile a binder with all of her recipes. I need recommendations for hot pads/oven mits for children. Typical oven mitts are too big. I was thinking maybe something silicone? What does your family like?
Amy in NH
My 9yo doesn't have any trouble at all with regular-sized oven mitts, and kids younger than 9 or 10 are probably too young/short to reach into a hot oven anyway. I wouldn't bother.
lovinmomma
Thank you! She struggles with the normal size. She's 10 and I always supervise/help.
zoobie
I don't prefer silicone. I find the mitts unwieldy and the potholders slippery. My big kids don't have problems with our current mitts. They're regular cloth ones from Target I think. They are more flexible after washing IME. What about the glove style?
Wilma
How about the regular square ones? That's what my people who are qualified (newly 8 and 9.5, both smallish) use to handle the hot stuff. So it's a thick fabric thing, with a little loop on one corner to hang it by? And not at all a glove.
Miss Tick
I'm a hot pad gal, myself, no sizing necessary and handy double-duty as a trivet. What a neat project!
Mommy22alyns
Mine just use what we have. I would have her use a potholder on both hands for a while though. Sylvia burned her fingers Christmas Eve getting cookies out of the oven. She was using one hand, and the pan tipped a bit. She unconsciously reached out to stop it, and she got a bit of a burn.
LostSurprise
I like a nice thick square pad myself. If you like the glove style and you know someone who knits you can knit up a few out of thick wool and then felt them in the dryer.
AMJ
For Christmas I found some oven gloves to give to a friend as a present. She was moving away, so I'm not sure how they worked out for her, other than what she told me over the phone. Some brands come in varying sizes, so you could try looking into those. These are not quilted mitts with thumbs, they are actual gloves designed to be used with hot things. You could also try looking for small turkey-frying gloves or grilling gloves. One thing I DID pick up for my kids to use here when I start them on baking is baking sleeves. These are thick terry-cloth sleeves with elastic at both ends that you put on (with the cuff inside your oven mitt or glove) to protect your arms from burning on the edge of the oven or the oven racks. I came close to burning myself this past Thanksgiving, and I don't want the kids to deal with that pain. I got the sleeves and oven gloves from a restaurant supply store online, and the sleeves, at least, weren't very expensive.
aggieamy
We use crocheted hot pads or the ones I made a million years ago on a loop loom.
lovinmomma
Has anyone tried these or something similar?http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002BNKO7S/ref=mp_s_a_1_32?qid=1424791562&sr=8-32&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=pot+holders&dpPl=1&dpID=51IFWECK4iL&ref=plSrch What about the triangular ones that are silicone? BarbecueMom
My kids have kid-sized oven mitts. They fit on my hands too, which is good because my big mitts tend to disappear during the summer grilling season. Can't link right now but they are the Curious Chef brand, orange/yellow colored. Got them on Amazon.
