Have you made a jello cell model before?

With candy for the organelles?  If so, how did you keep the candy and jello from liquifying?  Ds made one yesterday & several of the candy organelles, bled & liquified and the jello liquified in the middle.  Any idea how to prevent this?

we did this in september. we used two extra packets of unflavored gelatin along with the lemon jello and refrigerated it overnight. it was ok except in the middle,it was not really liquidy but not really firm. the candies werent in long enough to liquefy, my 4 yo insisted on plucking out the mike and ikes shortly after the cells were finished and there went that.

 

if I did it again, I might see if I could get some agar. I used to make 'jello' out of agar and grape juice back in the day when I did things like that. its a lot firmer than gelatin.

Our jello cell models had marbles, grapes...and something else...can't remember what.  Not candy.  :)

I used non-candy items for the organelles. A lot less tasty, but they didn't dissolve.

my dd did one using a soda bottle bottle, clay and jello.  She didn't use any thing else edible inside, though.

We did not use candy.

 

We made a simplified plant cell using a strawberry as the nucleus and green grapes as the chloroplasts.

 

ETA: We also made a rice crispy cell with candy. :thumbup:

I have never been able to get stuff to suspend in jello. We went the sugar cookie route.

I do not recall what candy I bought. DS drew a model and I took him to the candy store to pick out the candy.

 

Everything liquified. It was too sweet for DS. I suggest a cake.

Our jello cell had pompoms, rubber bands, styrofoam, clay, etc.  None of the organelles were food items.

This whole thread…jell-o, rice krispies, sugar cookies…has made me hungry.

 

Biology was never this tasty when I was a student. :)

We did it and it was great fun and learning. The key is to let your Jello mostly set before adding your organelles. I don't remember all the things we used as organelles, but they weren't all candy. Maybe that made a difference.

We made ours with both fruit and candy... I think we let the Jello firm up a bit before adding anything. Then we did a similar project in 4H with ziploc baggies full of Jello, fruit and candy. It was a big hit!
