Miss Peregrine
Maybe oldish news but I just saw this: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/theanchoress/2013/11/08/yes-an-invisible-bike-helmet-for-real/
Jean in Newcastle
It's an airbag for your head! I wonder what triggers it?
Miss Peregrine
It's an airbag for your head! I wonder what triggers it?I wondered that, too. Neck movement, maybe?
Kathryn
I was wondering about the trigger also.
AmyontheFarm
I'd like to see one that could stay filled and act as a neck collar so that the ambulance drivers wouldn't have to try to put one on you. Or one that would extend down past the shoulder levels for children.
PuddleJumper1
That's quite amazing. Here is the main site with FAQ and 'how it works'. Really quite something. http://www.hovding.com/en/how_it_works/

DarlaS
I want to know how much it weighs. I have shoulder issues, and after a bit even a well-designed crossbody purse gets uncomfortable.
ThatHomeschoolDad
So....a high, nylon collar, huh? Does it come with a cooling fan? It must have an accelerometer to differentiate between flying over the handlebars and bending down to tie a shoe.
dlcricket
Did a Google search and found this Invisible bicycle helmetFrom the article: It isn't invisible It costs $600 You can only use it once Apparently they have already had to recall the helmet, because in at least one case the zipper came undone in a crash, rendering it useless JUST WEAR A NORMAL BICYCLE HELMET, PEOPLE! From what I understand, if it goes off, it has to be replaced, like any helmet after an accident. But, normal helmets replacements don't cost $600. And the battery has to be kept charged. All new technology is outrageously expensive and useless to most people. But new tech research leads to even better technology. I'm not rushing out to buy these for my kids, but who knows what will be available 10, 20, years in the future. :001_smile: It's a very cool idea, if unworkable for 99% of people now. Also, if you were wearing it in the summer with normal summer clothes, it would be VERY noticeable. All the advertisements show people dressed for cool weather. Cool weather here (Michigan) signals the approach of snow and the end of bicycle season (Maybe not if you're in a very urban area).
ThatHomeschoolDad
There was a James Bond movie in which he had an avalanche coat that popped out a protective bubble -- which I had a gif for that.
AmyontheFarm
I remember wanting that coat after I had a skiing accident one year in grade school!

DarlaS
Well, it was designed and manufactured in Sweden! I'm aware of that. It's just a strike against it for anyone who might ever get on a bicycle in a tank top. It looks like it would chafe. I still haven't found any info on it's weight. ETA: Okay, it looks like it weighs about 1.5 lbs.
PinkyandtheBrains.
Well I think it's pretty cool.
Mandylubug
nifty! It will be interesting to see how the technology evolves with time! It may not be perfect now, but it is still showcasing other possibilities that break away from the norm! Love it!
