Amira
We want to go camping one more time before we leave the country. We've already done Shenandoah and other places west of DC lots, so we're thinking of going east this time. Maybe something by the Atlantic or the Chesapeake Bay? We'd like to keep the drive within three hours, although a little longer would be fine. We're generally car campers although we'll hike a short way to a site, or a basic cabin is fine too. I have obviously researched this, but if you have a great suggestion, I'd love to hear it. Thanks! Edited to change the driving time. bettyandbob
Further than 2 hours, but Assateague Island. I camped there when my older dc were little in October. It was a great trip.
PrincessMommy
Assateague Island is great. We camped in the Nat'l park (there's also a state park) and the horses will come up to your camp site. The only thing is as the summer progresses they get more aggressive, expecting food, etc. Have you been to WV? I know it's west, but that state has some lovely camping areas - Monongahela, Dolly Sods wilderness area, Seneca rocks.
xixstar
For going East, I was also going to suggest Assateague Island. But North and West, we enjoyed camping at Cunningham Falls this summer, it is North of Frederick. Nice sites and good hiking and swimming too if it's warm enough. Amira
We haven't been to West Virginia much. I think we'd like to do something near the ocean/bay since we've usually lived near mountains and have camped in them in lots of places. KungFuPanda
You might have luck if you look in Southern Md in the St Solomon's, St Mary's, or Calvert Cliffs areas. They're a close drive from D.C.
happypamama
Western Maryland is lovely for camping, as is southern PA (up around Gettysburg); both are fairly short drives from DC.
LaxMom
Cape Henlopen State Park (Lewes, DE) is lovely, as is Pokomoke (MD). Henlopen has WWII era watch towers all over the beach, pirate history, and the Cape May ferry all right there. The campground is very nice. Assateague is ok, but if you're on wheels, you're basically camping in a parking lot, and the mosquitoes and horseflies are outrageous. Their visitor center is closed for renovations right now, too. Cera
We like kiptopeke state park. It's a bit further south than assateague but the beach is great for kids.
*lifeoftheparty*
Another vote for Assateague! If you camp on the national side, you can have camp fires in the beach... We love Assateague :)
