ILiveInFlipFlops
Has anyone used anything they liked? I'm looking for something that covers the basics (systems, organs, functions etc.) and could be covered in less than a year--maybe a quarter or two? I'd even love to see anyone's homegrown plans. I have lots of human body books, but I flounder around a lot if I don't have some plans, and since I'm already writing comprehensive year-long lesson plans from scratch for two other subjects, I'd like to have something a little more open-and-go for this subject if possible! TIA!
Crimson Wife
Mr. Q Life Science is free and you could just download the chapters on the human body. http://www.eequalsmcq.com/download%20life%20science%20student%20by%20chapter.htm
chelsmm
We are using REAL science odyssey life for that. The first half of the book is he human body. The rest is animal/ plant kingdoms. You can actually check out the human body parts on their website in the try it before you but it section. I looked through it and liked what I saw. It would take only about a half a year, I'd guess, although you could spend longer on each system if you wanted.
teeniebeenie6
Jen the blogger at Guesthollow has put together a phenomenal looking human body curriculum. She has three levels available and it is free. We plan on starting it in a year to go along with Prairie Primer. http://www.guesthollow.com/homeschool/science/otters_science/otters_science_main.html . Everything of hers looks amazing actually. Farrar
You could just read the book Blood and Guts by Linda Allison and do the activities. Fun, easy, comprehensive enough for elementary, would only take a couple of months.
pitterpatter
Although not free, I designed a 10-week study of the human body around four favorite science series that includes book-specific draw-and-write prompts. It's for K-2...I have no idea what age you're looking for. http://www.currclick.com/product/86146/Exploring-the-Human-Body-with-Four-Favorite-Science-Series---Unit-Study
ShelzNH
We also used Guest Hollow a few years back. It was our most successful science year. We found most of the books at the library or ILL http://www.guesthollow.com/homeschool/science/otters_science/otters_science_main.html

ILiveInFlipFlops
Great resources, thanks everyone! I was thinking of Jenn's curriculum, but I knew it was longer than I wanted it to be. Maybe I can find some ways to compress a bit. I also have Blood and Guts (somewhere!), so I'll dig that out and see how much help it will be. I appreciate the replies! nova mama
Elemental Science might work? It includes a lesson plan to use with the recommended books, some of which you might already have. Here is a description of the elementary program, but there is another one for the intermediate level: Biology for the Grammar Stage lays out a 20 week study of animals, a 10 week study of the human body and a 6 week study of plants using using visually appealing encyclopedias. It is designed to be used with K through 2nd graders, but the plans include ideas to adjust the plans for use with your older students. ...The teacher’s guide includes a 2 day and 5 day schedule for reading assignments, vocabulary, experiments and ongoing projects. The student workbook includes all the pages you need for the ongoing projects, narrations and experiments, plus over 100 pictures for you to use with those pages. Here is a link to the sample: http://d3r1z7wkgqhj9d.cloudfront.net/Biology20sample.pdf
