HappyGrace
All the classics are so long to fit into a 3 wk period, but I'd like to do a classic with them. Any suggestions? (They are already doing historical fiction and all that with another teacher-that's why I'd like to do a classic.)
ccolopy
Are you looking for one from a specific time period?

Arcadia
Quite a few of the books recommended in this thread can be done in 3 weeks. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/365856-great-literature-for-5th-6th-graders-for-a-lit-class/
lewelma
Not really sure what 5-6th grade reading level is, but these are all classics and short: King of the Wind 5 children and It (might be too long) The story of my life by Helen Keller The lion the witch and the wardrobe Thimble summer Gone away lake The incredible journey Ruth in NZ
ccolopy
I'm not great at judging reading level, but some short books DS12 has enjoyed in the last year or two are: Treasure Island The Invisible Man Around the World in 80 Days The Call of the Wild The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde The Pearl
Guest rpm1026
Wow, your DS12 read The Invisible Man... That's quite the read! Did he find the content intimidating? What types of discussions did you have about the book?
lewelma
The Invisible Man by Wells is fine for a 12 year old, The Invisible Man by Ellison is a different story.
Harriet Vane
Around the World in 80 Days The Hound of the Baskervilles--if short, you can do just short stories one week The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (might be a bit short) The Story of My Life by Helen Keller short stories--O Henry, Crane, etc. Watership Down
Chrysalis Academy
Rip Van Winkle or The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Sherlock Holmes short stories - The Speckled Band, for instance HG Wells shorter fiction, like The War of the Worlds or The Invisible Man Lots of great classic short stories abound for that age group - Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe come to mind right away. HollyDay
Dd 13 just enjoyed HG Wells War of the Worlds. Both dc liked Around the World in 80 Days. How about Dicken's A Christmas Carol? Not sure about the reading level on that one though...... Alas Babylon? Bertie's War?

Chrysalis Academy
The Old Man and the Sea. I just have to laugh at this one, Hunter - we had to read this in school, probably around 9th grade, and I hated it *so much* that I have avoided Heminway for the last 25 years!!! I'm just now getting back to reading him. I'll have to look at it again, it wouldn't be the first thing that I read "too young" the first time and enjoyed later.
