We use the Kingfisher Geography Encyclopedia along with Children of the World (http://www.amazon.com/Children-World-Learn-Drawings-Photographs/dp/0789322676/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top), which shows a child's drawing and poem from every country along with a photo of children there and a few basic facts about local sports and food. My son is fascinated with this book and flips through it for fun.

If it is for you to get a few basic facts Knowledge Quest has an pdf whose name I forget. I have a copy of "children like me" which is OK but reading the NZ page made me realise that the other children represented might only be representative of a small section of the population.

I like DK's Geography of the World, I found a used one for pretty cheap. It has brief info on countries/regions/cultures and good maps.

You haven't said what age, but this one is good for younger ages...My Picture Atlas, it has basic info on every country.

What is knowledge quest? Or how can I look it up is what Im meaning.

I typed in Knowledge quest into google and got a lot of different things.

Knowledgequestmaps.com

The one I have is expedition earth but it is coming up with a message saying the site is being reconstructed after a crash in 2011. It came up with that for a while last year too but I was able to purchase it in the half price sale. I would have a look at the other stuff then contact them if you want to see a sample. They are very helpful. I think they are down a couple of staff at the moment though as a couple of them have gone to do final research for their latest book.

Rod and Staff Grade 4 is a geography book. It's excellent. I just use it as a read aloud, but it obviously was written to be used as a textbook.

We are doing the same.  I got the book for $3.xx shipped on Amazon as an FYI.  We also have the Usborne Geography Encyclopedia on the way as well.

We used this as part of my mom designed curriculum: http://www.amazon.com/Material-World-Global-Family-Portrait/dp/0871564300/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373353220&sr=8-1&keywords=material+world  It is called, "Material World:  A Global family Portrait" and it takes you around the world with short 4-6 page photo essays about different families.  It shows their material posessions all spread out in front of their homes, and gives you some brief info about the average family in their country.  Our kids LOVED this resource, it is one of the best to give a real sense of family life in other countries.
