where to find anatomy and physiology course or materials

I am having the hardest time finding either some materials/books for a class at home, or a online course. Does anyone have any information to share with me?

My co-op offers Anatomy & Physiology and I am pretty sure the teacher

uses an Apologia textbook. Maybe you can use that at home? I know the

teacher brings in lungs and things to dissect in the classroom so I guess you'd

have to purchase those too.

I am actually going to use the apologia elementary anatomy & physiology book, it is such a detailed book I never would have labelled it elementary at all. From there I am adding in a few additional dvds and labs (such as the human genome lab kit I found tonight), and microscope slides of human tissues, and pathology, gray's anatomy coloring book, and dissection labs. And then we will see.

3 of my kids have taken anatomy and physiology as one of their high school science credits. Our course consisted of Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology Fourth Edition by Scanlon + student workbook, TC A&P lectures, an anatomy coloring book (there are tons to choose from), and organ/fetal pig dissections.

I teach a high school Anatomy class at our co-op. We use the Apologia book (the Advanced one).I didn’t actually choose it as I inherited the class from someone else. I think the book is very solid. The author’s writing style bugs me a little. He’s very wordy and a little too informal at times. But overall the material is very good and comprehensive. It is a tough course with a lot of material and a lot to memorize. It’s very fast-paced. We require our students to have Biology and Chemistry per Apologia’s recommendations before taking it but I think they would probably be ok with just Biology. Apologia claims that their Intro Bio class plus this one prepare you for the AP exam. I’m not sure about that as I haven’t used their other course ever. But I do know that one of my students last year did take the AP exam. He said he did well but he’s one of those students where it was probably not the course or the teacher but just him.

 

Apologia has slide kits, dissection kits and a blood typing kit to go with the labs in their book. We elected not to do slides as there are oodles of very good histology slides online and it wasn’t feasible to have all the kids have microscopes in a co-op setting. If you already have a good microscope I think there is value in looking at slides yourself. If not, there are tons of websites with excellent slides. We do three dissections during the year: cow eye, sheep heart and fetal pig. You can order the specimens from Apologia but we use a different website as it is a bit cheaper. We have not done the blood typing kit with the kids to keep the cost down but I think it would be cool to do.

 

If you aren’t a Christian you might be bothered by Apologia. There isn’t a lot in the Anatomy class although he does like to insert statements like “Isn’t that amazing how God has created.....â€

 

We do have them buy a coloring book, I’m not sure they all use it but it is a great way to learn. I like this one. It’s very good and it’s the same one I used in medical school.

Many medical schools have their histology slide online so you can easily find anything with a simple Google search. Blue Histology is one of our favorite sites.
