Blessed mom
For those of you using FLL 1 and WWE 1 for first grade, what do you recommend to use for phonics and spelling alongside these other resources?
Jayne J
I have used/am using OPGTR for phonics, and for spelling I use the free Zaner-Bloser list. I can't link you since I am on an iPad, but if you google "spelling connections zaner bloser" it should come up. It is a 1-8 grade progression of rule-based lists, with activities. MFA323
We've used Spelling Workout this year (cross between K and 1). I think that it's okay but not great. DD thinks that it's boring except for the crossword puzzles. We have made it through A and the first 5 lessons of B. This weekend I told DD that she could be done with spelling for the year. Next year we'll start again with something else. I'm eager to hear recommendations on other programs. ETA: We finished 100EL in September. DD reads well and devours books. She rarely has a problem sounding out a new word. If she does, we talk about the phonics rule that she should have used. She seems to get more out of this than the spelling book. chicagoshannon
We finished OPGTR last year so don't use a phonics program anymore. We use Spelling Workout for spelling. I actually dropped WWE early in the school year because DD wasn't ready for it. She's ready for it now (has been for a while), but I haven't added it back in yet. I really should. boscopup
My first grader next year will use Phonics Pathways, and when he's done with that, we'll start R&S Spelling (starts at grade 2).
Maela
We're not technically in first grade, but: For phonics we're on the second half of OPGTR, and we use the EtC and Primary Phonics workbooks. She's a very good speller, so I kind of just rely on the phonics stuff for spelling instruction. FLL for grammar and WWE for writing. StartingOver
We used OPGTR, All About Spelling, and WWE, FLL. Loving it all.
ByGrace3
My dd completed Abeka phonics, but I wouldn't do that again. Ds will be using FLL, along with the WWE text next year, AAR for phonics, and AAS for spelling.
ForeverFamily
We are using WWE & FLL along with AAS for spelling and OPGTR for phonics review. That combination has worked great for us.
Five More Minutes
We used FLL and WWE 1 in Gr. 1. I used Jolly Phonics as our learn-to-read phonics program, and AAS as our phonetic spelling program. In fact, with my younger one, I ended up using AAS and the AAR readers to finish teaching her to read after she got stuck in Jolly Phonics. Clarkd
Urpedonmommy, I went to the spelling connections zb and it says it is $20. Is there a free version? Thanks.
Jayne J
http://www.zaner-bloser.com/media/zb/zaner-bloser/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html Sorry I can't hyperlink you. This is the website address I cut and pasted in. It looks like they have an updated version for sale, and this older version is free. ETA: Yay! It automatically linked for me! Not sure how or why, but there you go!
Aloha2U
We used FLL and WWE alongside Spell to Write and Read. As a matter of fact, they complement each other so well that we've continued to use this combo. :) http://www.morningstarlearning.com/Morning_Star_Learning/What_is_Spell_to_Write_and_Read.html

Melenie
I used FLL, WWE along with OPGTR and Spelling Workout with my first DD and will use the same again with the younger DD who starts 1st next year.
Tracy
After a really bad time with Spelling Workout, we started Spell to Write and Read. We are now in our third year, and it has worked out beautifully. I am now using it to teach my 5yo to read. The one thing that I recommend to anyone that is researching spelling programs is to find out about explicit phonics programs before deciding. Not everyone needs that much spelling instruction. I don't know that we necessarily need it, but I would rather put in the effort now rather than remediate later.
reign
My girls do 100ezl then OPGTR. After that I have them read aloud to me and start AAS.
Amy M
My dd completed Abeka phonics, but I wouldn't do that again. Ds will be using FLL, along with the WWE text next year, AAR for phonics, and AAS for spelling. Hi Nicole, I'm going to be using this lineup very shortly, except with ABeka phonics. I am very interested to hear why you wouldn't do that again! I've thought about switching to AAR, but thought it wasn't worth the money to change over, when I already have so much ABeka stuff. Punchie
DD is in first, and in conjunction w/FLL1 and WWE1 we're using ETC (Explode the Code). We were using OPTGR, but DD completed it in December. I'll start up with an actual spelling program in second grade.

We have done SWR this year for K & loved it.
kdownie
OPGTR for phonics. AAS for spelling. Very happy with both, though I do drop some of the dictation in spelling, especially phrases and sentences, if there is a lot of handwriting in WWE or FLL that same day. Dd's hand gets tired.
