When you have a "immediately family only" party, what food do you serve?

Recommended Posts

I've over-worked for years, but I'm slowing down now and we have more time to just enjoy being a family. We'll be watching returns and coloring maps on election night, and I want to do something special (but easy) in terms of food. Any family favorites for dinner or finger foods?

We just do finger food type things in that instance. All the fried evil stuff from a box that is so good and that you don't serve everyday. Thinks like potato skins, pigs in a blanket, cheese sticks, mini quiches, etc etc.

:iagree:

Ro-tel queso with tortilla chips.

Pizza.

Cheese and crackers.

Hot artichoke dip and crackers.

Chili and cornbread.

Rotiserrie Chicken (Deli) & quick side dishes (i.e. mac n cheese)

When we have a special family occasion, one of us will say to the other, "Let's smörg!" The usual staples for our family's smörgåsbord are bacon and/or crescent dough wrapped Little Smokies, salami, an assortment of cheeses (Gouda, Jarlsberg, and dill Havarti especially), olives, tiny dill pickles, Ritz crackers, tangerines, grapes, and sparkling cider.

Homemade french bread pizza. Get a $1 loaf of french bread from the grocery, load it up however you like pizza and bake until done. Get as many breads as you need for the party! This is a huge hit if there are kids

Cheeseball and crackers

Creamcheese (2 blocks)

Crushed Pineapple (8oz can drained)

Scallions (1/4 cup finely chopped)

mix together

Sliced Almonds - roll on ball

We do appetizers in this situation. Usually this consists of the aforementioned Ro-Tel/Velveeta dip, chips, homemade salsa, canned crescent rolls with hot dogs, a veggie tray with hummus dip, and tortilla roll-ups. Sometimes we add a terrible-for-you smoked sausage thing, fancy cheese, and crackers. If I'm feeling adventurous, I call my friend and get her imitation crab dip recipe. I give everyone apples or apple juice to clean out their system the next day;).

Our election night tradition is a crock pot filled with super meaty spaghetti sauce served with lots of bread sticks(fresh soft and fat hard) for dipping. I boil pasta as requested and we feast all night long. Not sure what to do this year. Being in the uk will certainly effect the timing--first returns starting at midnight. Popcorn???? Probably will let them stay up and watch the map for a while.
