Cricket
For our nature study for the next few months I've decided to focus on rocks and minerals. My girls are forever collecting rocks. I know nothing about rocks and minerals. I have no idea how to tell them apart. Any suggestions for (preferably living) books or resources regarding rocks and minerals? We have some museums we could visit but I need something to help us out at home.
Melissa B
I like this TOPS booklet: Rocks and Minerals.
jar7709
I have several posts on geology and rocks on my blog, with a lot of book recs for different levels. Let me know if you are looking for anything specific! :) http://fishmouseacademy.blogspot.com/search/label/geology?m=
HejKatt
USGS has some nice write-ups and photos. http://www2.nature.nps.gov/geology/usgsnps/rxmin/rock.html http://geomaps.wr.usgs.gov/parks/rxmin/index.html http://education.usgs.gov/lessons/schoolyard/index.html Also, MII (Mineral Information Institute): http://www.mii.org/links.html As an aside, I've found so many resources on USGS that I feel like an USGS apologist. :) I've tried to pin them individually on my Pinterest boards. http://pinterest.com/duplorers/elementary-science/ http://pinterest.com/duplorers/free-science-materials-from-usgs/
NittanyJen
The Happy Scientist has study units on rocks and minerals, including how to test them. $20 will buy you a year's subscription to his website (or $10 through Homeschool Buyer's Co-op, if that is still going on). Roadside Geology books will show you how to spot stuff locally. On Amazon, there are fun and affordable kits for rock and mineral identification, crystal growing, and smashing geodes. Tonia
I like the book Geology Rocks. Lots of fun activities. Your library might have it. Pick up a field guide so they can figure out what rocks they have. We like the Audubon First Field Guide - Rocks and Minerals.
Luckymama
Volcano World from Oregon State University is a classic website for kids http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/rocks-and-minerals Ignore the lesson numbers next to the links. The Minerals and various rock-type links lead to great basic (but not dumbed-down) explanations, diagrams, and photographs.

BatmansWife
I got this game years ago at a garagle sale, brand new. It's a fun way to learn about different rocks and minerals.
