scubamama
Have you had your donut yet? Where are my PA chicks on this board? You guys know what I'm talking about! People in LA have never heard of Fasnacht day - since moving here from rural PA Dutch country I feel like the ambassador for PA Dutchies everywhere. Now my friends say, "Go on and lay something on me PA style!" I feel I am doing my part to bring multiculturism back to LA! I went to the Yum Yum Donut shop and stocked up - I'm handing out some "fasnachts" today tomy neighbors. Good times!!! Making the world a better place one donut at a time, Michele PS No threads about exercise today, please. I can't bear the guilt!
knit247
We are celebrating Faschingsdienstag here in Germany and have had our Krapfen (donuts). We'll also eat Deutsch Pfannkuchen (German pancakes) for dinner. Enjoy!!! Edited February 21, 2012 by knit247 added italics - I love to do that... Krista in LA
As much as I've come to enjoy a good King cake, I definitely miss my fastnachts. You do know that the ones from the donut shop aren't quite the same.... I made some from scratch a few years, but I eat way too many of them when I do that. :tongue_smilie:
mommaduck
Yep, had one. Not my favorite donut, but it's a donut :) I think it's a cultural thing, because I don't get the big deal over a donut (it's not like it's a Krispy Kreme or a donut from the Fractured Prune). Still kinda funny that there is a donut day :D
the evolving homemaker
i have NO idea what you are talking about, but you had me at DONUT.

mommaduck
i have NO idea what you are talking about, but you had me at DONUT. Lard fried donuts. It's Fat Tuesday, so the tradition (I believe) is that this was a fun way of using up the last of the lard before (Catholic) Lent (I mention Catholic, because the EO do Lent differently). I think this is a Germanic tradition.

Occasionally
We just finished some (well, DS3 is still eating...) It'll definitely be hard to get any lunch into them today! Homemade fastnachts are way better than lunch!

Homemade fastnachts are way better than lunch! That looks entirely different than they sell here. What I see in the stores here look EXACTLY like the donuts they sit next to. Maybe that's the problem. I'm eating what is sold in the stores instead of homemade.

Maybe that's the problem. I'm eating what is sold in the stores instead of homemade. These are modeled on the ones I had when I lived near Harrisburg. They also have mashed potato in them. There's a slit in the middle of each so they cook more evenly. Of course, when you make homemade, you have the opportunity to make it however you like it :001_smile:
nukeswife
I've never heard of this day, but what you're making look like zeppolis or sopapillas.

Krista in LA
Here's a little history and a recipe if anyone is interested. They are made with potatoes and are a way to use up lard and sugar before fasting for Lent. I don't slice them and put syrup on them like they mention in this article though - I prefer glaze or a jelly. http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art8521.asp
Margaret in GA
Sadly, I can't eat gluten. I used to looove when my mom made fasnachts! My poor kids have never had them. :crying:

Momof3littles
Do you dip in molasses? I never liked them growing up, but my mom just served them plain. DH likes them but his mom served them with molasses for dipping. Maybe I was missing out. We bought them or neighbors brought them to us; my mom never made them. Stratford
Just ate my first one of the day (well, one and a half...) My favorite day of winter! Between fastnachts and soft pretzel rolls, I love my corner of PA!
Chris in VA
No wonder I craved donuts today! Had one, but not the traditional kind. Having pancakes tonight, too. Not my favorite way to get ready for Lent, but it'll do. :001_smile:
