whitestavern
Besides The Christmas Carol, what are some good "classic" Christmas read alouds? This would be a longer, chapter book for a 9 and 11 yo.
Carol in Cal.
The first couple of chapters of Little Women.
whitestavern
We've read Little Women already, but it's a good suggestion; I definitely think of it as a Christmas book :)
Aurelia
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever? Not really "classic" in terms of education, but it's been around awhile. I think The Pickwick Papers has a Christmas chapter.
morosophe
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever? Exactly what I was going to suggest!

ErinE
Another vote for the Best Christmas Pageant Ever! My children love this story and I think it illustrates the heart of the Christmas spirit without being mushy.

tristangrace
The Birds' Christmas Carol, by Kate Douglas Wiggin. It was written in 1888, and like many books of that era, it's a little "precious", but really an awesome book nonetheless.
LAS in LA
Robin finds Christmas by Molly Brett Maybe more for younger than 9-11 yrs, but the lovely pictures aren't "babyish".
Aurelia
I also found The Christmas Box, written in 1994, with a Christian focus.
Lori D.
These are all classic short stories set at Christmas by well-known authors: A Child's Christmas in Wales (Dylan) -- memoir Christmas Every Day (Howells) -- funny Gift of the Magi (Henry) -- funny and poignant The Fir Tree (Anderson) -- sad The Story of the Other Wise Man (Van Dyke) -- inspiring, poignant Theses are wonderful Christmas books for all ages, but especially good for your 9yo and 11yo: Father Christmas Letters (Tolkien) -- fun and charming Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree (Houston) When It Snowed That Night (Farber) -- lovely collection of Christmas poems The Hundred Dresses (Estes) -- a powerful story set in December There is a lovely chapter in "Mountain Born" (Yates) in which the boy stays up to see the animals speak at midnight on Christmas Eve. There is a sweet chapter in "The Moffats" (Estes) in which the children write letters to Santa. And, of course, the original Christmas story in the Bible: Matthew chapters 1-2, and Luke chapter 2 Edited November 24, 2011 by Lori D. added some titles
aggieamy
Holly and Ivy. It's a long picture book as opposed to a chapter book but it's wonderful still.
nmoira
The Box of Delights by John Masefield Nutcracker and Mouse King by Hoffmann or The Tale of the Nutcracker by Alexandre Dumas père. Murmer
The Polar Express!!!! I know its just a picture book but it is a great book to share every year!
whitestavern
Thank you to all who replied!! There are some great suggestions here (including many I've never heard of). I have six books on my short list. I'm hoping we can get through all of them before Christmas.
Hedgehogs4
I know these are not "classic Christmas stories" per se, but the last couple of years my kids have really enjoyed these advent stories about children during the time of Jesus' birth...in time they come to encounter the holy family through a series of adventures. There is a scripture and devotional with each day's reading, and then the next installment of the story. My kids are always on the edge of their seats and begging for the next day's story, but you "can't" read ahead ;-) . We have done these for two years, and I think I will get the third one for this year, too.

Ellie
The 101 Dalmations. :D See, in the book, the pups come home on Christmas day; the night before, the pups spend the night in a church, and one of them is transfixed by a Nativity, which she watches all night. Ok, maybe not classic *Christmas,* but consider it to be *classic.* FTR, we cannot bear to watch the Disney animated debacle which unfortunately has the same title. :glare:
