Places in the US you'd love to visit --

Recommended Posts

I live in California. So I've seen everything here. Well, most things. But, out of state I'd love to see.... (and these are in no particular order of importance)

1. Yellowstone

2. The Grand Canyon

3. New Orleans

4. Seattle

5. The Great Lakes

6. New England in the fall

7. Niagra Falls

8. New York City

9. Philadelphia

Pretty much everything.

We still need to get to Alaska. We've been to the other 49 states already and have hit almost all the places people here have suggested so far. ;)

IMO kids need to see:

Oceans - preferably from more than one spot/state to get a feel for how large they are

Deserts - more than one variety

Forests

Mountains (both eastern and western as they are different looking)

Washington DC

NY

Historical sites like Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Mesa Verde (very short list, of course, but any historically significant place would make my list)

Palm trees (not in a mall)

Snow (real stuff, not man-made)

Volcanic sites (Mt St Helens, Hawaii, etc)

Tide pools

A decent cave set (like Carlsbad)

St Lawrence River on a sunny day (prettiest river in the world - nice blue)

Crater Lake

Lake Tahoe

As many National Parks as one can fit in, esp Yellowstone, Sequoia, Badlands, Arches, Mesa Verde - well, any of them as they all have their merits.

Niagara Falls & the Great Lakes

A farm with farm critters and fields, esp at harvest time

A hydroelectric dam with a "how it works" section

I'm probably forgetting some things... but there's nothing like travel to really fill in mental pictures in ways one just can't get from books. ;)

Oh this is making me want to TRAVEL.

As soon as this baby is out, we are hopping in the car and GOING somewhere. I'm basically cherry picking from everyone else's ideas :)

1. Yellowstone

2. Redwoods in California

3. Grand Canyon

4. Mt Rushmore

5. Hawaii

6. Mt St Helens

7. New England in the fall

8. Alaska

9. I've been there before, but I'd like to take the kids and DH to Niagra Falls

I'm starting to think that we are going to be planning a family vacation soon :)

I'm not from the US but when we have visited, we've loved pretty much everywhere we have been. The standouts:

Washington state, we drove the Cascade Loop, it was really stunning.

New England in the fall, including the covered bridges and little stores.

Niagara Falls, I wouldn't go again, but for a oncer it was fairly amazing.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. What a stunning piece of architecture!

NYC was all I expected and I'd go and spend more time in a heartbeat.

You all are probably used to lake resorts, but for me Deep Creek Lake in Md was just gorgeous, we don't have places like that here, and staying in a house in the woods by the lake and seeing bears and deer was magic!

And of course, Disneyland. Where dreams come true.

Next time we visit, I'd really like to drive from LA to Colorado, in particular I want to see the National Parks in Southern Utah, and the Grand Canyon.

If you go to Yellowstone with young kids, be certain you can keep them in hand. It can be a dangerous place for those who might run off. I'm all for going, so don't think I'm trying to discourage you, but it might be a better trip in a few years for your ages. I still recall having a heart stopping moment at the top of Niagara Falls once at an unfenced area along the river. My toddler went running at top speed toward the edge. He planned to stop - and did - but my mind can't stop thinking about what could/would have happened had he tripped or something. I was far more cautious afterward. And we've still traveled and had a blast. ;) Just pick carefully when they are younger.
