NanceXToo
My daughter is going to start guitar lessons in September, just a few weeks before her 11th birthday. How many days a week do you think she will need to practice, and for how long at a time? Just rearranging my "schedule" a bit and trying to figure out what to account for. The lesson itself will be once a week, for a half hour.
Ria
Daily for at least 30 minutes is what our kids did with piano...
Lolly
I would start off with two 10 minute sessions several hours apart. Let her build up her fingers/skin. Gradually build to two 15 minute sessions. My guitar girl practiced 30 minutes a day (minimum 5 days a week). Often, she did more because she liked it~ Edited August 17, 2011 by Lolly
abbeyej
5 days a week (plus a lesson on a 6th day). Maybe only 15-20 minutes at the beginning, while her fingers are getting used to it, but as she learns more, quickly up to 30 minutes a day. Harriet Vane
My 10yo practices classical guitar 45 minutes daily, except Sundays and lesson day.
Parrothead
I'm planning on having dd practice actual fingering 10 mintues a day to start out. I figure eventually, once her fingers are more toned and calloused, she will practice more often.
NanceXToo
Thanks for the feedback!! I wouldn't have thought to start with fewer minutes and build up to a half hour or so. But I will make sure to do so now!
Starr
Shorter practice times every day are better than longer only twice a week.
Hoggirl
Practice time = lesson time. So, 30 minutes a day, six days a week. Every day but lesson day. That's the rule in our house.

The best advice dh received when learning guitar was to keep his guitar on a stand ready to grab and play.
