Guest aschoessow
I'm having a hard time finding good art to do with my son, he is 5 years old (K). Does anyone have any recommendations as far as a good art program goes? Or if I should even use a "program"? I'm not even really sure what I could/should do as far as art goes? His drawing ability is pretty poor at this point (as is mine) which is sad, considering he LOVES arts and crafts. He enjoys drawing but I don't really know how to teach things like: adding detail to his pictures, dimension or even simple pictures to challenge him a little bit. He wants to draw, I'm just not sure how to direct him. We do nature journaling and illustrating some books we read - though most of the time you can't tell what his picture is (for lack of detail and simple dimension). What do you all do? Are you following/doing an art curriculum? Do you have a system you follow? Do you add as you go? What should a Kindergartner know? Though I am very creatively challenged, I enjoying doing crafts with my son and am willing to learn :) Help! Thank you, Amber
Leimarie
Does you library have any Evan-Moor books? I've borrowed Folk Art Projects and ArtWorks for Kids and I really like the way they're written. The projects are easy to follow. They also have a general art book "How to Teach Art to Children" but my library doesn't have a copy. :( Edited October 18, 2010 by Leimarie sorry, wrong title. kwickimom
My friend loves How Great Thou Art. I looked at it and it looks awesome! I just got mine in the mail today :001_smile:
Mom0012
I always recommend Atelier. Lisa
Ellie
Art With a Purpose. A number of suppliers sell it, including Rainbow Resources.
Snowfall
My DD is loving Artistic Pursuits. I've also looked at Atelier, and we may switch to that next year...or just add it in, since she's such an artsy thing. :)
patchfire
They also have a general art book "How to Teach Art to Children" but my library doesn't have a copy. :( This is a great book and would be my recommendation. Add some MaryAnn Kohl books for other ideas; the projects in Preschool Art would not be too 'young' or 'simple.'
twoxcell
For an intro to drawing we love Draw Write Now. For art we are using this book right now. There is a whole series available from this company.
kalanamak
I always recommend Atelier. This has done very well for artistically challenged me and not-a-born-artist kiddo. I started out with Artistic Pursuits, but rapidly hit a wall. I did find, however, the the AP art supply advice was really, really good. I got all the stuff at Dick Blick's. Michelle My Bell
I teach art and I use several websites all the time to find projects. They are so good, I am going to suggest that you don't need a curriculum at all if you use them. I would suggest picking out several weeks worth of projects and buying the needed art supplies ahead of time however. http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/ http://www.artprojectsforkids.org http://www.kinderart.com/ http://teachkidsart.blogspot.com/ http://thatartistwoman.blogspot.com/
Aurelia
We used Atelier and really liked it. If we weren't switching to a curriculum that has art included, we would be using it again this year.
Woodland_Mom
We have enjoyed "How Great Thou Art", too. It is open and go--so easy to teach. I feel that my kids have learned lots of art concepts without being too overwhelmed. This program is very doable AND enjoyable.
