So then this morning we are off to school and doing the "car-math" thing. Currently we are working on adding and subtracting (the Singapore way) by re-grouping Tens.

So if we have 73 - 8, we know we can't subtract 8 Units from 3 Units without getting into negative numbers (a standard disclaimer). We know 73 is 7 Tens and 3 Units, which can be re-grouped to 1 Ten and 63 to ease mental math computations.

From the regrouped 63 + 10 we subtract 8 (from the 10) which leaves 2 + 63, which is 65. Easy!

So far so good.

Then do an addition problem. Likewise we are making 10s.

So if we are doing 47 + 8, we look to see how many units the 7 needs to become a 10, and re-group the 8, so 3 goes to make another Ten (there are now 5 Tens) and 5 Units remain. We've done this many (many times).

So what happens THIS morning?

William what do you do if you have 47 + 8.

Well you take 4 from the 8 to make an 11, that gives you 51 plus 4.

FIFTY-FIVE!!!

Wise guy.
