Dog Experts: Book and website recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Something that has crate training. :P We had a beagle for a little over two years and we never did get her potty-trained. To be fair, I think it was just us!

I admit I love the Dog Whisperer. Go watch full episodes online. I like Leerberg too - He has several on YouTube and his site is worth reading through. Granted, he works almost entirely with German Shepherds, but his articles are worth reading.

LOL. Can't stand Millan & don't have much use for Leerburg either (though his raw feeding FAQ with pix is nice!)

Ian Dunbar is DA MAN!

http://www.dogstardaily.com/ - in the top menu bar there is a link for Training Textbook & it's large chunks of Dunbar's of his books for free as his gift.

Read it all & you'll be well on your way to knowing what to do with your new pup.

I already posted the Diamonds in Rough link on another thread:

http://www.diamondsintheruff.com/ - the Behaviour FAQ is huge & covers so many things, it's like several books in one!

www.clickertraining.com - b/e I heart Karen Pryor. I use the i-click clickers from her site

Sue Ailsby's training levels - a complete clicker training curriculum, all systematically laid out & FREE. Plus there's online support on a yahoogroup where Sue herself often pops in & there are tons of people working through the levels & can help brainstorm solutions if you or your dog get stuck.

Patricia McConnell's books (The Other End of the Leash esp.) & her blog

http://www.theotherendoftheleash.com/

(gee - coincidentally she's blogging about dominance myths today LOL)

AND esp for you: Xsara, the Agility Beagle blog

(her owner trains with Silvia Trkman, two time world champion, 10 time national champ..... another wonderful & inspiring person)

btw, there's a good article about Ian Dunbar:

The Anti-Cesar Millan / Ian Dunbar's been succeeding for 25 years with lure-reward dog training; how come he's been usurped by the flashy, aggressive TV host?

I'm not a dog expert, but the book that I found most helpful with our last dog was The Dog Listener (Jan Fennell). She has a website too: http://www.janfennellthedoglistener.com/

I've got her book on hold at the library again since we got a new dog. He's a beagle mix. :)

Cat

ETA: Thanks to hornblower for the links. You'd posted some of them before and I've wanted to look at them again now that our pup is settling in!

THANK YOU! I like the sound of Dunbar's methods so much more than Millan's. Sounds like the difference between attachment parenting and Babywise.

So you're saying that the Dog Whisperer is Babywise? Oh man, I'd have to disagree with that, but still, whatever works for you works for me. :)
