Melissa in St Louis
Epiglottis? Uvula? Whatever it is, it is swollen (and see it with flashlight and mirror), hurts, and sticks to my tongue every time I breathe. It hurts to swallow, but is feeling TONS better than it did when I woke up this morning. This morning it was AWFUL. Do I need to go to the Dr? farmgirlinwv
Sounds like your tonsils. I'd get it checked out.
Jennifer in MI
This happened to me once. It was the strangest feeling! I don't usually google health related stuff, but I did on that one. It's nothing! I think it took a day or two to go away.
Aunty Social
My dh had the same thing last year. He went to the doctor because it was HUGE and whenever he swallowed it kind of went down his throat and bungied back up. I think the dr gave him a steroid (just a dose or two) and it went down within a couple hours.
sweetsouthern
yeah, it happens to my dd off and on as well, i think its probably allegy related. maybe try some benadryl at bed and if its not better in a day or so, see the doc?:grouphug:
ChristusG
Strange! I've never heard of that happening....glad to hear it is probably nothing to worry about. I hope that you feel better soon. I have only one tonsil hurting right now, so I think that's strange too.

LibraryLover
Gargling with warm salty water will help tremendously. Do it frequently and for as long as you can each time.

Perry
The uvula is the thing that hangs down from the top of your palate. The epiglottis is flap of tissue at the base of your tongue. A swollen uvula isn't usually a big deal. A swollen epiglottis is a life threatening emergency and if that's what you're talking about you need to go to the ER now. Usually you can't see the epiglottis without sticking a mirror down someone's throat, but if it's really swollen it's possible that it is visible. If you are absolutely sure it's you're uvula, don't worry. If you're not sure, go in.
MeanestMomInMidwest
Here's what the Mayo Clinic has to say about epiglotitis http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/epiglottitis/DS00529/DSECTION=causes My advice would be to call your doc and get an apt ASAP OR go to an Urgent Care Center OR ER Could be strep, which is curently going around in my house. Terabith
I have gotten an inflamed uvula several times. The first time it happened, I FREAKED OUT. But apparently it's not a big deal. Uvulitis or something is the technical name. The first time they gave me steroids and it went down quickly. But the other times it's gone away within a day or two by itself. If you are having trouble breathing or anything, then definitely go in. But otherwise, maybe try gargling and give it a day or so.
Amy+2
I have to agree with farmgirlwv. I would get it checked out. My niece was diagnosed with strep 2 days ago. First sign was the very swollen uvula. (Her mom is an RN, btw, who majority of the time lets things 'ride out'.)
LadyAberlin
Haven't had that, but my sister when she was about 4 or 5 was walking with a crochet hook in her mouth and the maid bumped into her and it made it go down her throat. The maid turned around and saw my sister choking and the end of the crochet hook sticking out and she yanked it out, not knowing there was a hook on the other end. It caught her uvula and split it in 2. Blood was coming out her mouth and nose. The maid was freaking out, I was freaking out and got my mom who took my sister to the nurse next door and she said not to worry about it and that it would heal on its own. It did. nukeswife
It's probably not a tonsil thing. It happened to me about a year ago and it felt like I was choking each time I tried to swallow, I went to the Dr. and he said there was nothing to do but wait for it to go down on it's own.
