SS in MD
Dd used GWG 2 in 2nd grade. While I liked the workbook format, she really needed more daily review and didn't retain like I had hoped. I already own R&S English 3 (my older girls have used R&S Eng 3-8), but I think it may be a little to fast paced for her also after years of R&S Eng it is tiring... but thorough! LOL! Anyway, I am considering FLL 3 along w/WWE 3, just don't know if this will be good it, dd is not auditory. Is FLL 3 fast paced too? But, I like that there are some fun activities scattered the lesson. Are there any other recommendations (besides R&S and GWG)? Thanks! SS in MD
Also, I believe I read on this board that after FLL 4 there are no more books... and TWM recommends R&S, so I wonder if for 2 years its worth doing FLL? just to switch to something else? It would be nice to find something that we don't have to change to... what do you all think?
Surfside Academy
I made the switch from GWG to FLL3 this year as well. I really like the FLL 3 format. Its a workbook format along with some teaching instructions. It also recommends a very reasonable schedule; 3 lessons/week. I like all of SWB's materials so I might be a little biased! :D
BillieBoy
Are there any other recommendations (besides R&S and GWG)? Thanks! We are using Voyages in English for writing and grammar for grade 3, I also purchased Exercises in English (Catholic publisher but secular) as a supplemental workbook but that alone would be a good basic grammar. As nice as this has been for us for 3 years I am switching (I know fickle :)) to Michael Clay Thompson Language Arts Curriculum
Hannah
We are using the free Kiss Grammar program.
Testimony
I am using First Language Lesson (FLL) 3 with my younger son. We are enjoying this program. I love the schedule, 3 days a week. I love the way it is scripted. I added my own touch to it. My younger son is a busy bee. So, we go outside and kick the soccer ball. He recites his grammar definitions as he kicks the ball. We do a lot of silly things with the program to make it more hands on. We just did a poem last week where he had to spin around. I love the way diagramming is taught. skaterbabs
CLE has a good bit of review built into each lesson, you may want to consider it as well.
psychgal
I was planning on Shurley English. I haven't used it, but got it on my sister's glowing recommendation. I haven't seen it talked about much here in the forums. Is it not widely liked? Edited August 1, 2009 by psychgal
Mommy7
psychgal...if you do a search using "Shurley" or SE, I think you will find lots of posts on it. And, as usual, some say it's great and some say it's not so great! :D
Gretchen in NJ
I have used both FLL 3 and 4 with my girls. I liked them very much as did my girls. The only complaint was from them. They felt the stories for narrations were too geared towards boys for FLL 4. I liked FLL 1, 2, & 3 better than FLL 4. FLL 4 has the same set-up as FLL 3. I think it was the feel of it. We replaced most of the poems with ones we liked better.
corbie
Grammar is really repetitive in the early years. I don't think they are meant to retain everything. That's part of the reason the same topics are repeated. We are using GWG with our 3rd grader. She loves it. She can do it independently, which is a plus for me. I have to be very hands on with her in math. Anyway, I'm sure many of the same topics are repeated in grade 4. If something doesn't sink in this year, it will next, or the next. I can't handle another teacher intensive program, so we are sticking with GWG.
momto2Cs
We're going to try G.U.M. (Grammar, Usage, Mechanics) by Zaner Bloser.
