CactusPair
I can't decide on a girl name. Opinions on these choices would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! We're looking for a classic name that's not overused. Which do you like best?
Chelle in MO
I love Clarissa! Must be something about the "cl" at the beginning. The girl name I had chosen was Claire. I ended up w/4 boys! Have fun choosing! Chelle
orangearrow
I *voted* for Gwendolyn - BUT I would vote for all 4 - they're all beautiful names, so I don't think you can really go wrong here! :D
iamom
Clarissa and Gwendolyn are my favorites. Good luck deciding!
elise1mds
I voted for Gwendolyn... Clarissa gave me flashbacks to that show "Clarissa Explains It All." The others are beautiful but my husband's grandmother was a Gwendoline, so I'm partial ;)
vettechmomof2
I LOVE Gwendolyn but have about 6 different friends with children with that name who were born in the last 2 years. Cordelia, all that I can think of is Buffy the vampire slayer. But I still like the name. I like them all. Tough choice.
amsunshine
I voted for Sylvia. All beautiful names, but I just love the nickname "Sylvie" (which you may hate, of course):).
yslek
I didn't vote. If this baby is a girl, we're going to name her Sylvia (or Silvia). I also want a not-overused name, so I found myself wanting to click on anything other than Sylvia out of selfishness!
CactusPair
Thanks for all the feedback so far! I've sensed that Gwendolyn may be coming into vogue, but 6 kids in 2 years with that name! Wow! That's a good thing to be aware of. We don't watch TV, but I have heard of Cordelia on Buffy and the Clarissa character. I'm ok with that, I think. Those shows aren't on anymore, right? Oh, and I do love the nickname Sylvie. One of the big draws for me to the name Sylvia. Too funny about not wanting to vote for Sylvia (Silvia)! I'm super protective of "our" names, too! LOL. Congrats on your surprise baby! Thanks for all your help! keep it coming! Edited June 18, 2009 by CactusPair
E_Edgerton
Sylvia! It was my grandmother's name (she was an amazing woman), I love the meaning (of the forest) and I just think it is beautiful. I have always loved it...I may use it one day too. Until then...best of luck picking a name!:)
melhouse
I voted for Sylvia. All beautiful names, but I just love the nickname "Sylvie" (which you may hate, of course):). :iagree: I was going to say the same thing!! Congratulations, Melissa
JFSinIL
I vote Clarissa. I also like Gwendolyn - but dislike Gwen, which is probably how folks would address her.
muffinmom
how about Gweneth or Gwyneth?
CactusPair
Actually, I love Gwenyth, but unfortunately the ending "th" runs into the beginning sounds of the last name and sounds lispy. Thanks so much for all the replies and votes! You've helped a lot and given me much to think about!:001_smile:
Michelle My Bell
Just before coming on the Internet, we were watching Anne of Green Gables and I told my daughter I was going to change my blog title to "Call Me Cordelia". Anne says right at the beginning when asked her name, "Can you call me Cordelia? It is such a romantic name!" Michelle

We love Anne!:D
Dobela
I voted for Gwendolyn, but it is rising in popularity here. I didn't vote for Clarissa because I know several Carissa's Claire's, Clara's, and Clarissa's in his area. I love Cordelia though and almost voted for that one. Sylvia is not a favorite. Isn't that the one that has the meaning of Tree? I think that is what had turned me off when naming my own kids.
Beth in Central TX
I'm probably showing my age here, but Clarissa makes me think of the movie, The Silence of the Lambs. I wasn't as discerning back then about the movies I saw. It was disturbing to say the least, and I can hear Anthony Hopkins say "Clarissa" anytime I see or hear the name. I voted for Gwendolyn; I like the nn Gwen too. Good luck!

Beth in Central TX
You're right! It has been a long time. I guess I just associate any clar- name to that movie. Sorry about the confusion! That's what I get for trying to plan lessons for Latin AND participate on the boards...
Wee Pip
I like all your names, so I didn't vote. It's hard to predict popularity because the social security administration top 1000 names only shows years past, not naming trends going on currently. Here's a neat site to see what people are naming their babies right now (search by state and city, and it shows what names are popping up in hospitals): http://www.our365.com/Wisdom/BabyNameScape/default.aspx We just went thru this whole dilemma...I wanted a classic name, but classic names are really popular right now! We finally found 1 name we both liked, but were undecided on it. When baby arrived 2 months early, that's what ended up being her name:) We choose "Georgyana" for our lil' girl - I would've opted for the "Georgiana" spelling, but we wanted to distance ourselves from the movie, The Duchess, which pronounced it differently. Anyhow, choosing a name is really difficult, but that moment of clarity will come...Good luck!
