What SALES are you looking forward to?

School supplies! I need cute composition books and folders. -
What are your best memorization tips?
almondbutterandjelly replied to Garga's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It would be great if you knew how you memorized best. I didn't realize until I was in my forties that I easily memorize something if I write it down. Oh, it could have saved me a lifetime of repeating things outloud and wondering why memory work was so painful. So that's my two cents. Try writing it down. See if that makes it stick. -
My favorite organizational strategy is large plastic tubs with lids for seasonal decorations. They are see-through, but color-coded. So my Halloween decorations are in transparent orange tubs with black lids. My Christmas decorations are in green tubs with green lids (I would love red and green tubs, but these were cheaper). My easter decorations are in pastel tubs. Thanksgiving is orange with orange lids. I don't have any good 4th of July decorations. I only like re-usable stuff, but I'm tired of cardboard things from the dollar store. I want cute stuff. I don't have any. I like that seasonal candle idea. I don't actually burn candles, so they would totally be re-usable. I do have about 4 large wooden flags, but that's because my living room is sort of "Coastal Americana" if that's a thing. (On two of my flags, the stars are starfishes.) I buy linens when I throw some out because I've decided I can't deal with their holes anymore. Then I buy new ones at Burlington Coat Factory because they are very discounted. I enjoy throwing things away. I don't have knick-knacks anymore. I also keep a goodwill pile in the bottom of my closet where we put clothes that we grow out of or decide we hate. I periodically make my child try on most of her clothes so I can keep on top of her wardrobe.

Scotch glue sticks are wonderful. I get a set of them from Sam's. I still have a craft on my fridge that was Scotch-glue-sticked when my dd was 4. She's 15 now.

You might check out Roamans. They have several dresses with sleeves. http://www.roamans.com/Plus-Size-Dresses-and-Skirts.aspx?DeptId=26514 (I, too, am apple shaped, plus size and feel your pain.)

Obsessing about math again. Talk some sense into me.
almondbutterandjelly replied to Tiramisu's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
What about Key to Fractions? Followed by or mixed in with Key to Decimals and Key to Percents? (I know they aren't on your list, but they are workbooks and more visual. And I highlight them to add color for my visual kid.) -
What to use for Anatomy and Physiology?
almondbutterandjelly replied to Ggg's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
:bigear: I'm looking into this as well (although I won't need it for a couple of years.) Apologia Advanced Biology: Human Body looks promising. -
We are currently on Medieval/Early Renaissance, but for the more modern time frame, we plan on continuing to use Human Odyssey by the K12 people. Volumes 2 and 3 would cover your time period. They are rather inexpensive used on Amazon. We really like them. FWIW, I also bought the K12 World History book (which is geared more for high school) and decided against it in favor of the more interesting Human Odyssey (technically, volumes 1 and 2 are for middle school). I am a firm believer in interesting history books.

How to get a teen to actually *use* sunscreen? <rant>
almondbutterandjelly replied to KarenNC's topic in The Chat Board
Long sleeve rash guard and swim tights over the swimsuit. It's not social suicide here. We are a beach town. By the way, we just discovered swim tights this year and are in love. Perfect for the beach! Swim Outlet has some that might be sufficiently trendy for a teen girl to feel awesome and not embarrassed. http://www.swimoutlet.com/searchresults.asp?Search=swim+tights&checkRealSearchInput=Y -
A fifties party, where they dress up (possibly) and watch Grease. Milkshakes in fun glasses (I've seen the glasses at the dollar store). Old records used for decorations. Lots of pink and black streamers. Diner food. Roller skating. Trampoline park. Water park. A murder mystery party. We like themed parties at our house. Pick a favorite movie to watch and plan decorations and food around it.

This is what made fractions click for my dd and we kept coming back to it periodically for reminders: Building Fractions Activity Center by Lakeshore Learning http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C925%2C904&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1466459303824

High School in Texas

Have him complete his credits. Then type up a diploma on the computer and hand it to him. :) -
When you call the doctor, ask to speak to a nurse. The nurse can usually bypass the receptionist and get you in if you are sick. Are you in the yellow zone for asthma? Tell the nurse. They'll probably put you on a steroid for a few days. It tends to clear things right up in my dd. You need to get seen. If you still can't get in... If you have a significant other/husband who is male, have him call and ask to speak to a nurse. We have much luck with this. ((hugs))

What about Apologia Physical Science? It seems to meet all your requirements, labs, tests, notebooking, etc. cbd.com has everything, I believe, including a lab kit: http://www.christianbook.com/apologia-exploring-creation-physical-vol-2nd/jay-wile/pd/336402?event=Homeschool|1002429 (My dd used this book in classical private school for 8th grade, if that gives you any information as far as difficulty.)

I'm generally of the opinion, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Does MUS work well? We actually switched to MUS for Algebra and it has cut way down on the tears and way up on comprehension of the big picture and the "why" of math. So don't believe the haters if it works for you, honestly.

What to title this course?

I'm boring. I would just call it English IV or English 12 -
Now my grammar curriculum question
almondbutterandjelly replied to Tiramisu's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Does she learn well from black and white? Maybe she needs color? Check out Critical Thinking Company's Language Smarts. Or does she need stories to learn? Maybe The Sentence Family would be a better fit. Or Schoolhouse Rock, Grammar Tales, and Punctuation Tales. There's a fun book for grammar called I Laid an Egg on Aunt Ruth's Head that might be more her cup of tea. (We tended to do "fun" grammar because R&S had no retention for us either. Eventually (9th grade) we switched to Seton Grammar.) -
Someone decide for me...

I loved American Pioneers and Patriots. I also love tall tales. (Evan Moor has a fun literature pocket for tall tales.) So that's my vote. -
We dropped our landline and I had to force myself to have a routine with my cell phone. I have a wall-mounted basket where my cell phone lives if I am at home. The charger is there, and I make myself charge it every night. I leave my purse unzipped hanging in the hall way. That's my reminder to get my cell phone in there before I go anywhere. As soon as I come home again, cell phone goes in basket and purse gets (and stays) unzipped. Hugs. Put some routines in place. You can do it.
