  1. So far, for 10th grade, I have picked: Chalkdust Geometry, I own traditional, but am wondering about new Apologia Biology A Beka World Literature BJUP Writing & Grammar World History, Starting with Streams of Civilization Vol 1, finishing with BJUP, or all BJUP P.E. Foreign Language - she wants to do Italian..... we are not Italian, I really want her to do Spanish because my son is taking it in college (locally) and then they can talk..... I'm trying :) thinking about Rosetta Stone She says she really wants some dvds, can someone give a list of Teaching Co. dvds for World History (or a link to a thread, but the thread I saw I couldn't figure out what series they were talking about). Thanks!
  2. Can someone tell me about Write @ Home or provide a link to a thread? We are also doing A Beka World Literature, are you picking the writing assignments from the questions in that text? If not, where are you getting the assignments? The research librarian at our local library has offered to do a research paper class, even if we are the only ones that come, that is what I'm doing. She is wonderful and got my son and I through his research paper in 12th grade! Not sure if she would be open to coming up with all writing assignments, that is what I need, I have a terrible time coming up with what to tell her (my upcoming 10th grade daughter) to write! Thanks!
  3. Which Chalkdust Geometry are you using, new or traditional? Which composition?
  4. Hi everyone! Does anyone know the differences between Chalkdust's new and traditional geometry? I own traditional (my son did it), I liked the dvds but not sure how I feel about the text. I also didn't like the tests at the end of the chapters. Would love to know about other tests (and what problems to pick to do, that is a big challenge for me with CD). My dd is doing geometry next year, she has done BJUP since 3rd grade.
  5. I know someone who liked "Physics in Your Life" Teaching Co. set. They used it with Apologia Physics, her son did both the 1st and 2nd year physics.
  6. I have seen people on here recommend SOS (Switched on Schoolhouse). Anyone else have opinion? We may have to do a SOS thread.
  7. I have found that nothing substitutes for a real person. The research librarian at our local library was willing to walk my son through his research paper. She is also willing to do a class on it for local homeschoolers. Even if my daughter and I are the only ones in the class, we are doing it this next year (for 10th grade).
  8. I looked at BJUP Algebra 1 and TT Algebra 1 side by side. TT Algebra 1 level was between BJUP PreAlgebra and BJUP Algebra 1. I was considering using TT Algebra 1 for my daughter in 8th grade after BJUP 7th grade math because the PreAlgebra seemed too easy. A friend told me that the reason math takes a pause between 7th and 8th grade is because the kids are changing a lot developmentally and need a little pause with the math, I listened to her, did the BJUP PreAlgebra, then my daughter was very ready for the BJUP Algebra 1. Don't ever rush the math, even the head of math at a prep school here told me to never do math above level, better too easy rather than too hard.
  9. Yes, PLEASE do that, my son did place into calculus for college, got his first ever "c" first semester, then failed Calc. 2 this semester. The adjustment to college, and the fact it was twice as fast did him in and he is a good student. And, he may be in trouble with that to take for the second required math class, someone suggested PreCalc first in case this happened, should have listened! This college doesn't let you go backwards in level, once you take lets say a 141, then the rest have to be after that.
  10. Click the word thread, it is highlighted, maybe that will take you to it.
  11. Find your state's homeschooling association, they can give you names of people who are homeschooling in your town. Then you can find out about local activites, co-ops, etc.
  12. I know I read of someone doing it distance learning where the professor called once a week, think it was a college in Oklahoma??? Hope someone who knows more details. I am very new to this and don't know how to search for it. If you don't get any more replies, repost with German in the subject line.
  13. We are watching them now, borrowed them. We are only going to watch first 8 video classes, the rest don't seem to apply, they are about traditional school, college, etc. My daughter likes his studying suggestions, we aren't finished yet, he is going to cover writing a research paper.
  14. That is a complaint against CD Alg. 2, that they don't have trig. The course is excellent otherwise for a math oriented student. We did CD Alg. 2, but it was too hard, and my son burned out half way through. Dana Mosely did admit that that course is just shy of college algebra, I can vouch for that! So, we did BJUP Alg. 2 the next year, it had trig in it, along with calculator instruction that was very helpful. Our cousin teaches honors Alg. 2, he did tell me they don't do trig because of lack of time, I was calling to ask if it was ok that we didn't do sequences, he said they do those instead of trig. Trig is covered in precalc, and at my son's college, trig is covered in college algebra.
  15. I did "relaxed" science in elementary years, used a lot of DK Eyewitness/Usborne books. Apologia does have elementary books now, they didn't when my kids were that age. I did BJUP Science 6 with my daughter, then moved her to General Science Apologia for 7th/8th, and Physical Science Apologia for 8th/9th, I did the two texts over 3 years. Those two texts are very good prep. for high school science.
  16. My vote would be Apologia Biology. Ran well, I did get a little lost on dissections. May spring for BJUP dissection dvd. Also looking into the free online class that is in another thread.
  17. Is the older version? If so we did it. I just divided Level 1 in two because it is two credits over two years. (The new versions are 1 credit each). I think we did 5 sections a day, added quizzes, did the workbook, I checked the work to their keys (wasn't hard), then tested, and checked them to keys. When his answers were different, I just showed the key to him and he told me if it was right or not (I don't speak Spanish). I would love to use it again, except my daughter doesn't want to do it on our old "dinosaur" computer!
  18. Stephanie, I don't know how to do this when you add your email to the reply, sorry if it looks bad.... My son really liked BJUP 12th grade English/Grammar/British Lit. But, we ordered whole grade, and it would cost about $400 to get just one subject. He did the workbook for grammar without the dvds except for the dvds with paper instruction, and that helped us a lot. He really enjoyed the British Lit. teacher on dvd, she is one of their best teachers. The grammar teacher is great as well, but my son had already mastered most of it, so asked to just watch her for paper ideas. If your son is struggling with grammar, he will get it after watching her! That being said, in our area, I think I was the only homeschooler that even did British Lit. (and we did it twice, A Beka's in 11th, BJUP in 12th) because my son likes that sort of thing. A lot of the homeschoolers in my area just read from a book list and do book reports and discussions for 12th grade lit. And a majority of them do English 101 at the technical college. Hope this helps! Susan
  19. I "scoured" a homeschool book fair looking for a government text, I personally didn't like Sonlight. It seemed too narrow for lack of a better word. I wanted a text that covered all aspects of our government. We picked BJUP American Government and really liked it. It worked well w/o the DVDs (we ordered the DVDs (whole grade), but we didn't think they added much, so to save time, my son just did the book. Liked it enough to save it for my daughter. I have a friend that liked Notgrass as well.
  20. We had to do that even with Apologia Chemistry, my son and I spent a lot of time going back and forth, I don't know chemistry, had to look at study guide answers and test answers to help him. Not looking forward to it next time around. IMO chemistry is just hard! I do have Teaching Co. DVDs, my son looked at them before the college chemistry, he told me to add them to Apologia Chemistry and it would go better. We'll see!
  21. I liked BJUP World History, one of their best texts. Did w/o dvd, son just read, answered questions, did review and tests.
  22. We experienced math burnout several times with my son. Consider putting it away, and starting over next year with the curriculum you like. We liked BJUP Algebra 1 with my daughter this year, but used the DVDs. Don't know how it would have been w/o them. I am one of the few that doesn't like TT because it is like Saxon with constant review. Was a disaster for precalc..... trying to learn hard trig, while reviewing functions and logs was more than my son could take!
  23. I use the Apologia tests, but for the vocabulary, make up a matching the definition rather than them having to memorize. And, I change the score a little because Dr. Wile assumes that 90% is an A. Here, 93% is an A. So, if my daughter got a 95%, I would change it to 96% or 97% (half way from 93-100).
