  1. The taxable income amount on your 1040 refers to the amount of income subject to federal income tax. I'm guessing that a huge majority of that $5500 is self-employment tax, and the amount that is calculated on is based on your Schedule C income. (I think; it's been a few yrs since I've done all those forms.) When dh was self-employed we ran into the same thing. There were two years where our taxable income was zero! That self-employment tax nearly killed us. Sorry.
  2. Like EKS, we have only used his Algebra 2 book, with 2 of my 3 older ones. And I agree with these: With my fourth, I am using LoF Advanced Algebra, but I am starting the look at alternatives for the next couple of years (which is how I came upon this thread). HTH
  3. My husband's motto is "I may grow older, but I refuse to grow up." When we were 21, I thought he was making a joke; I wish I had realized that he was serious.
  4. Just keep playing with it, trying out the different tools and commands. You'll be a pro before you know it!
  5. This is what we did. Now, my oldest two boys are gone (mostly?), my next two girls have the largest room (finished attic with their own bathroom), and the youngest two have their own rooms on the second floor.
  6. I've been homeschoolng for 19 years and never had any outside help. Tips? Try to develop a routine, but be flexible. Choose your priorities. Train your kids to help, whether it's playing with a sibling for a short time or helping to clean. Imo, we all live in this house and we all need to work together to complete the things that need to be done. I'll have a spotless, well-decorated home and a pretty yard when all my kids are gone. HTH
  7. Can I please borrow yours for a little while? I'll pay postage and send a deposit, whatever you want (almost! ;)) Alternatively, would you mind copying the first few chapters and send them to me? I'll pay all your costs of course! I can't trust dd with the TE, otherwise I'd just have her work from that. Thanks for your help!
  8. Ok, the title makes no sense (cause I thought this window was for my new post on the HS board, but they must've switched on me)... But we've been given lots of ground venison over the years. I use one lb or ground beef with one lb of ground venison and double all my recipes..which I do anyway. For roasts, I cook it all day in a crockpot with a can of apple juice concentrate, that shred it and add bbq sauce and ketchup to taste, thinning with water as necessary. HTH
  9. If you shop at Aldi stores in any one of a dozen states, your bank card information could have been stolen. Check your bank accounts! http://aldi.us/us/html/company/12502_ENU_HTML.htm?WT.z_src=banner&WT.ac=Banner-without-Alt-Tag This happened to us; we found out on Saturday, but didn't know of the Aldi connection until talking with people Sunday night after church. Thankfully, it's not a *large* sum of money for us, but it still affect us. What a pain.
  10. Dd's flight from Madison this morning arrived in Chicago 11 minutes early, giving her a bit longer layover which sure helped! It was SO helpful for her to know in advance the layout of the airport there, and which concourse & gate she'd have to go to. Thank you, eternalknot, for the links providing the airport layout and the flighttracker. She and her teammate got to their gate about 10 minutes before boarding began, which is just right, instead of it being a stressful, last minute thing for a couple of inexperienced travelers. :001_smile:
  11. The staircase separates the kitchen (not an eat-in) and the dining room. When the kiddos were all little, I would not have wanted them carrying their plates to the table, and it would've taken me too many trips. So we serve from the table. I generally don't transfer food from the cooking dish to a serving dish; the cooking dish becomes the serving dish. Good enough.
  12. I was going to say yes, but that would be 100% accurate. Those of us who are HERE eat together, but hubby is seldom home for dinner because of his job/work schedule. So I chose "other," and I"m not being a smart alec with it.
  13. Yes, most of my kids WOULD sit and watch it for every minute it was on. I'm a big fan of limiting screen time; I've seen the benefits in my own children's behavior and attitudes. However, I also limit for content and because most commercials are really inappropriate for children. Plus I'm not really much of a tv person. I like background noise too, and always have music on. I've done so for most of my life.
  14. Well she's almost 19, so not really a child. She IS confident and able, though. But this is a good reason, imo, for her to go through the travel agent if the two of them miss their plane. Thanks for your input!
  15. Homewood Suites. I don't know if there's one in Orlando, though. They include breakfast every morning. They have a "manager's reception" supper every Monday through Thursday evening. You can get a suite with two queens or two doubles (depending on locatoin) plus a sofa bed in the "living room" area. There's also a kitchenette with a full fridge if you want to pack your lunches each day. We love them!
  16. This is SO helpful! I checked the details for today's flights, and found that the flight from Madison left 5 min early and arrived in Chicago 10 min early. It would be nice for dd if hat happens later this month! You are right about concourse G for her departure. They're flying in/out of Syracuse, since it's the most centrally located for everyone. On the plus side, we live close enough to SYR that I don't have to leave the house until after dd's flight is in the air. So if she ends up on a later flight, it's not too big of a deal. Oh, wait, it might be... how are my other girls going to get to their piano lessons?? AACK! I'm not thinking that far ahead yet! :willy_nilly: Never a dull moment!
  17. "So what is it that you do all day?" Yep, I really said that... to a homeschooling mother. Thankfully it was someone I knew, not someone I'd recently been introduced to!! She was telling me how her oldest was using BJU's HomeSat, and that he was totally on his own with it. She bought him a bunch of DVD's and given him all the books so he could correct and grade his own work, cause she just didn't have time. At the time, I was homeschooling five kiddos (but I'd had 7 the year before) in grades 1 to 11. In contrast, she had two others at home who were late elementary and junior high, no learning difficulties or other untypical challenges. It just came out of my mouth before I could stop it. She answered that she ate bon-bons and watched soap operas. I apologized and explained my perspective, and she was very gracious. I do have three left at home now and feel like I have tons of time -- it's all relative. :D
  18. Thanks for all the tips and info! The group is flying American all the way. Their trip TO Madison is through Detroit, where they have an hour layover. Oh well. We'll go over stuff with dd, but hopefully, they'll make their connection just fine. ;)
  19. My dd (who turns 19 next month) is flying with 3 other 4H'ers and a coach to Madison, WI later this month. She and one of her teammates are flying back separately from the others since they had their choice of when they wanted to return to NY. I don't know about the other kid's flying experience, but dd has flown direct to Orlando and back about 7 yrs ago, and flew to Madison last year with a larger group -- in other words, not much. All the travel arrangements for this trip were made through someone at the state 4H office, who used a AAA travel agent. Their return flight gives them a 40-minute layover in Chicago, where they have to change planes. DH and I feel this is way too short a layover in this situation. Assuming the plane arrives on time, 40 minutes isn't enough (in our opinion) for taxiing to the gate, getting off the plane, finding the new gate and getting on the new plane. So we emailed the state 4H contact. She said that if they these two miss their plane in Chicago, they should call her. She will then call the travel agent to rebook their flight, that this is a better and easier plan than them trying to get another flight at the airport ticket counter. I've never heard of that before; not that we travel a lot, but whenever we've had trouble, we've just gone to the ticket counter. That said, here are my questions: 1. Are we unreasonable to think that a 40 minute layover is ridiculously short in Chicago? 2. If so, shouldn't the travel agent have known better? 3. Is is really better/easier to rebook through the agent than right at the airport? Maybe that's moreso for this situation...let the travel agent fix it rather than stressing the 'kids' out? There was something else I wanted to say, but now I've forgotten it.
  20. I find the Sentence Composing books to be more advanced than the titles let on. We've done the elementary book in 7th or 8th and the Middle School book in 9th or 10th. My current 10th grader did the Middle School book last year; I may have her do the High School book before she graduates, but overall, I think it would be too much for a 12yo and most 14yos Just my 2 cents.
  21. PS is not an option here. When I started 19 years ago, I had three kids and I don't really know what my intentions were. I was thinking of taking it year by year, but I didn't have a long-term vision in my head either. Some days are hard, some days are REALLY HARD, but those kinds of days happen no matter what you do. It's been great and I wouldn't have it any other way.
