  1. I would go with Emma-Leigh. My 2nd dd was giving her 4H public presentation at state fair yesterday, and one of the other girls was Dani-Ann. It looks good in writing (imo), and makes clear your intent. People may botch the spelling or pronunciation, but that happens with almost any name. My oldest is Bryan. Some people use "i" for "y"; ok, I get that. But the mom of one family we've known since before he was born STILL writes Brain (though he is one. LOL).
  2. This really made me LOL. I almost dribbled chip dip on my keyboard!
  3. Sometimes being the good mom, doing the right thing, means being the mean mom. Don't feel like dirt. Wear your trophy proudly. ;) Persevere.
  4. This is where I am this year. My oldest two are STILL finishing last year's school work. I've set some intermediate deadlines through the summer, but I definitely feel like this: :banghead: My kids are 10th, 8th, and 6th for this year. They've already been warned that June 30 is indeed the deadline, or they will do NOTHING next summer. They can sit and watch me swim in my friend's pool, cause they won't even be going swimming. This is our 19th year homeschooling. Imo, the homeschooling part gets easier when the little ones are older and more independent. Some of the rest of it gets more complicated and difficult, but you already know that. Dare I admit that as I peruse the boards this afternoon, I'm also writing my NY-required 4th quarter reports (due June 30), letter of intent (due July 1) and IHIPs for this year (due August 15)? I do have almost all my materials for the year, I know what's left to procure, but I haven't done a single bit of planning yet either. Day one is September 8. Yep. Me too. Hang in there.
  5. I've been making up my own forms for many years now, mostly because no planner has what I want for 6 kids. Three have since graduated, but it's just easier for me to tweak what I have on my computer. Before making own forms, I used The Homeschoolers Journal
  6. Thanks for sharing! My son the president geek will love it!!
  7. I went to look at SL's info about their Core 6 and Core 7, and this is the plan I'm considering now: Do SOTW 1 & 2 for this year (6th & 8th), then SOTW 3 & 4 for next year (7th & 9th). Get the tests for each book, but use them more as a means of review and notebooking for each dc. Have older dc (dd) read two or three of the suggested (SL) readers and read-alouds per quarter, and have younger dc (ds) read fewer. My kids read a lot and like to read, so this part will be easy. That does leave me wondering what I'll do when they're 8th & 10th, but we can cross that bridge later. I appreciate any further input/experience anyone has to share. Thanks!
  8. Thanks. This is very helpful. Does Sonlight use the last two books the following year?
  9. My youngest two are starting 6th and 8th grade this year. I've borrowed the four volumes of SOTW to use with them, as we've done only a little with non-US history. I had hoped (I guess) to do one book per quarter, but now that I have them, that seems like way too much to expect of them. If you used SOTW for these ages, how did you do it? Or if you're more familiar with SOTW, what would you recommend? Thanks very much! Chris, who is rather behind in planning for this school year.
  10. We have never had "hired help" and for many of our homeschooling years, our income was below the lowest value that you set. It was just never an option. Half my kids have graduated, and half are school age. So, really, it's much easier now that it was even 5 or 7 yrs ago. But if I could, I would like a cook and a housecleaner, and I'm quite certain dh would like someone to take care of the yard.
  11. All my kids have always been homeschooled, very which I am very thankful. My oldest 3 have graduated: Number 1 was glad to be homeschooled at the time. He's in a different place now in his life, and while he doesn't regret being homeschooled, I don't think he currently believes he wants that for his own children. He's 24 now. Number 2 hated that he was homeschooled beginning with 10th grade or so. Everything was my fault; I ruined his life. He took cc classes for his senior yr at his own expense because he didn't like dealing with me and my "rules". If he's changed his mind, he hasn't told me. He's 20 now. Number 3 was glad to be homeschooled. She like that she could work at her own pace on her subjects, giving more time for the things that needed it, and less on the things that came more easily. She also like the fact that there were more opportunities available to her in the community (work, volunteer) that she could not have done if she went to school. I don't know if she will hs her own children. She's 19 now. My 4th is in high school now, and likes being homeschooled. She is advanced in many subjects, but I will not allow her to graduate early. Instead, she will have more advanced subjects on her transcript. I don't know if she will hs her own children either. HTH
  12. I researched it briefly and am note finding how to make that a permanent setting, or if it is even possible. Sorry.
  13. I think it depends on a lot of factors, such as the kid's style and personality, whether or not he's a quick learner, how well he retains information, whether or not he's a good test taker, how self-motivated self-disciplined he is, and as well as the mom's style and personality. I'm sure there's more but this is off the top of my head. In other words, one size does not fit all.
  14. Do you agree or disagree with this statement: You should not post pictures of other people's children on Facebook, tagged or not, without the parent's permission unless the children are member of your immediate family or are on Facebook themselves. If you do not agree, I'd really like to hear why. :bigear: Thanks!
  15. Alternatively, select all your cells...<Ctrl>+A will select all..., then click on Format, then Alignment, then click on the box that says "wrap text" so there's a check mark in it. HTH
  16. If you set your printer preferences or settings to "draft," it will use significantly less ink per page, but you'll hardly be able to tell the difference.
  17. The Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers. My oldest son loved them when he was in high school...and he'd read all the Thoenes' books as well. I do recommend the Zion Covenent, Zion Chronicles and Zion Legacy series for 14 or 15yo and up.
  18. You are not locked in to using whatever you wrote on your IHIP. If you make a change in curriculum, text, etc, just say on your quarterly report that instead of "A" you used "B" and continue with your report as usual. No explanation necessary. HTH
  19. I have always just listed the instruction books we are using. I have never included a reading list on my IHIP or my quarterly reports, though I might say something on my quarterly report to the effect of said child has read a number of fiction and non-fiction books. If I'm not using an instruction book, study guide, or the like, I give a brief list of topics. And I never add subjects or details that are not required by the regs. Keep it simple. HTH
  20. I've used Building Thinking Skills with all six of my kids. We start the book with the first Figural section, then go to the first Verbal section. Next the second Figural section, then the second Verbal section, and so on until we get to the end of the book. Sorry, I'm to lazy atm to get out of my chair and look up the names of each sections. We don't usually do BTS every day, usually just 3 days a week. It has generally taken them 3 yrs to finish the book. I don't push them through it.
  21. The P2P materials make it real easy and fun. Follow the plan they give you and you'll be all set. Really!
