  1. Right Start MCP math Singapore Math Miquon Math MathUSee Rod & Staff Teaching Textbooks 4 A Beka math 2 ALL of the Key To books Math IT Making Math Meaningful 1 Making Math Meaningful 2 I'm sure I'm missing something. The only one we've stuck with is Rod & Staff. :)
  2. I don't know...what to do...what to do.... Maybe I'll stick with Apologia (I just remembered I bought the science box for it from Home Science Tools, too...ugh) and go s-l-o-w-l-y. :willy_nilly: <---How I'm feeling about 2nd grade science right now. :)
  3. Hi! I purchased Apologia Zoology 1 and TWO of the student notebooks. SIGH. However, I am concerned that the lessons will be overly long. I recently heard about Elemental Science. Is there anyone here who has used it and can share his/her experience? TYVMIA... :)
  4. Hi, Jan. :) What a great question! There are probably less expensive programs, but I'm not willing to take a chance or looking to hit or miss with something else. I don't know how I would find the equivilant of a 4th grade reading level in a Dyslexia program. Susan makes specific recommendations for programs other than Bartons if a student does not pass the assessment. I like that! I feel that if we come up against a problem on down the line, she will have good advice for me and my daughter. We'll start at the beginning of Barton and go through to the end. :)
  5. I agree with hsbaby. Progress is success!!! I can detect progress so I usually don't let it get me down. Keep on keeping on... Slow and steady wins the race... It's a marathon, not a sprint... :grouphug:
  6. I received an email from Susan regarding the readers and she had some great information. I will send a reply asking her if I can quote her here. However, I will share that Susan recommends NOT adding to Barton's at Level 1. I will post that quote is she says I can... :)
  7. Hugs, Leslie... :grouphug: Your hiking up our pants comment reminds me of what my friend told me. She said it was time to put on our big girl panties and get to work. We can do this for and with our girls. :)
  8. I received my Barton box today! Right on top of the manual was a letter asking me if I've taken the Tutor Screening. I hadn't, so I went to the website to take it. That's when I noticed the Student Screening information. So I printed the Student Screening Answer Sheet and watched the demonstration on the Barton website. I stopped the demonstration, when told to, to test my daughter. Thankfully she passed Tasks A, B, and C. If she hadn't passed C, I would have been looking for a tutor (lips) and if she hadn't passed either A or B, I would have been buying another program from a different website (http://www.proedinc.com/customer/default.aspx) to start with. I didn't see these screenings despite all the time I spent on the Barton website before making my purchase. All that to say, don't forget to take the Tutor Screening and to give your child the Student Screening...before you buy! Hth someone...and if everyone else knew...well, duh on me... Edited to clarify: The letter went on to say that if I took the Tutor Screening and did NOT pass, then Barton would refund me for the Level when I returned it. So that's a wonderful thing for them to do! :) :)
  9. Thank you for your advice about CM style narration! We had been using Apples & Pears spelling and she is able to write sentences from Level A from dictation. I think we might consider continuing...we'll see. Thanks again! :)
  10. Thank you so much for your response! Now that you mention the Barton readers, I remember seeing them on the website. Therefore, I am not going to add the Sonlight readers to her schedule at this time. We will be doing a light school schedule this summer in which we will finish math and do Barton's. That's all I have planned for her at this time. I believe she will be fine with Apologia because I ordered the Audio CD. If she hears something, she remembers it. We will work through Omnibus I together. Thanks again, :)
  11. I wrote a post about Barton Level 1 and our 12 year old daughter. This question concerns helping her Short Term Memory... How do I do that? :)
  12. What should we be doing in addition to Barton? Our 12 year old daughter was recently tested in a Texas public school by a diagnostician who tutored at Scottish Rite for 20 years. The finding is dyslexia, which I had suspected for a loooong time. Although our daughter tested in the superb and high average range on many of the 'tests', she needs remediation for reading fluency and ability as her scores for those things were in the low average range. She is academically 'behind' in math and reading; scoring at the 4th grade level rather than 6th grade (I have to double check that, but I am downstairs and the results are upstairs...In other words, I'm feeling lazy about walking up the stairs...LOL). We ordered Barton Level 1 and I am expecting it any time now. What should be used along with Barton Level 1? Is there a specific set of readers we should use? Is it okay to use Winston Grammar (basic) with her while using Barton? Do we wait to do any writing until IEW after Barton Level 4? Should we use ETC or something like it? We currently plan to use the following materials for 7th grade: Omnibus 1 Winston Grammar Rod & Staff Math 4 Apologia General Science Barton Level 1 She will be taking a scrapbook/folderbook Geography class outside our home. I am considering using our Sonlight Core 2 readers for reading practice and I WAS looking at WriteShop 1 until I heard about IEW after Level 4 of Barton. OH! And how can we help her short term memory? Maybe that's a subject for another thread. Thanks for your help... :)
  13. When someone can't find what they're looking for, I say: Look with your hands! And that person usually then finds what they were looking for... :)
  14. You truly need the Teacher's Manual. I cannot imagine doing R & S math without the Teacher's Guide. I've taught R & S first grade math 3 times, their second grade math twice, and their third grade math twice.
  15. Go to this website: http://www.chickensintheroad.com and search for soap. The lady there has made both cold and hot process soap and shows the steps and gives helpful hints. I love her website! Hth... :)
  16. Someone has probably already mentioned this, but where we live, in Texas, you CAN trim down anything that is infringing on your own property line, BUT you have to leave the trimmings for the owner otherwise, it's stealing! I think you did the right thing, I would have been SOOOOOOO MAD.
  17. Thanks, Macrina! My Dh and I are going to go through boxes together this weekend to find my Activity guide. :)
  18. I have SOTW versions that I purchased several years ago. I need to order the activity pages for Ancient Times. Will the revised activity pages work with my not revised book and the audio CDs? I tried a search, but didn't come up with an answer, so I'm sorry if this has been discussed before. Thank you! :)
  19. We use a fresh cloth napkin every time we eat and then put it in with the dirty linens. I have lots of napkins that I bought at Sam's. They are in the restaurant supply section. I've been using them for 4 years. :)
