  1. But she is not a Native American in the movie. She is a white woman who, as a child, was taken in by the Pawnee after her parents were killed.
  2. I am from Maryland, which I consider the Mid Atlantic region. Too far south to be considered the North East and too far North to be considered the South East. I now live in the Atlanta area.
  3. I totally agree with you (as usual.) I have never heard of Freddy the Pig. I am going to go look it up now.
  4. I mean, I understand that if you are old enough to go to war you should be old enough to choose to drink alcohol. What I don't understand is why laws regarding drinking age should be different for those who enlist in the military. I don't agree with the premise that because you enlist in the military suddenly you are a responsible adult when everyone else your age is not. I don't believe that is true from what I have seen of my DBIL's men. While I believe a drinking age of 21 is a farce, I don't think people in the military should be given special consideration.
  5. Is she babysitting for them while they are at work? If so, they are able to pay her with money that is pretax money. I have my sitter's SSN so that I can get reimbursed from my flexible spending account. I do pay her in cash.
  6. I agree totally. It also overlooks the fact that we don't have the refining facilities to deal with more oil. Our refineries are out of date and are not big enough to keep up with production. We need to fix the refining problem more than we need to drill for more oil. More efficient refining is the way to go.
  7. And this is the guy I had a huge crush on in high school. He didn't dress like that in high school. I doubt he dresses like that unless he is in a movie roll that requires it... But back to the discussion, my DH always wears sleeves. My boys do, too. The only time they are shirtless is at the pool or the beach. Kelli, we have a guy in our neighborhood who runs in just tiny running shorts, too. And I have to do a double take to make sure he isn't naked.
  8. Yes, our goals are anchored. My DH checks them every time our kids take the field. We got an email about the incident in AZ this morning. We play out of a Y, too. I almost applied for the job running the program. That is a lot of work. Thanks on behalf of all the parents and kids in your league.
  9. I totally thought you were going to say we should bet on when Sue will have that baby. My senior prom was the same day as the Derby. Prom was at the Pimlico Hotel. We ate dinner at a restaurant right by the track. I just thought it was a funny coincidence.
  10. Call your midwife. I really think you should call. Are you sure she didn't say call back if it continues or repeats? Call.
  11. I would insist they go. I don't know why, though, now that I think about it. But, I do think I would drag everyone to the event. In fact, I have done just that sort of thing. But then, I also took a 1 year old to the Olympics in '96 just so he could say he had been to the Olympics. My parents took us to all sorts of things in Baltimore and DC when we were growing up. I remember the King Tut exhibit, a couple of inaugerations, the Tall Ships, etc. I don't think we necessarily wanted to go, but go we did. And we remember them. (Actually, my little sister does not remember the King Tut exhibit.)
  12. In Georgia, we are required to have a college degree in that field or a related field. With my engineering degrees, I was deemed qualified to teach science or math grades 6-12. I have to be observed more than traditionally educated teachers. However, at least for me, the results of the observations are more about what I can improve upon as opposed to what I am doing wrong, if that makes any sense. I teach precalculus this year, and I getting certified to teach AP Calculus this summer. The other teachers who teach these courses were math/education majors. I bring a different perspective in that I used both calculus and trig as an engineer. Working together, we are able to teach these subjects rigorously and with some real world applications thrown in. I think it is a nice balance.
  13. Us, too. DH just left to coach one rainy soccer game. He'll be back in a while to pick up DS1 to coach his game. The little people and I do not go in the rain. I don't like to deal with one who is just starting to walk at a rainy soccer game.
  14. I am currently in one of these programs in Georgia. I have a Ph.D. in engineering from Georgia Tech. I teach math at an "at risk" high school, meaning we have over 80% of our kids on free lunch. It is a challenge every day. I did take the equivalent of 18 college credit hours of teaching classes. I have to hand in a portfolio at the end of two years. The portfolio is a gathering of documents that prove my ability in 24 different areas of teaching according to a book by Charlotte Danielson. Not a Ph.D. dissertation by any stretch, but certainly equivalent to any senior college project and many masters level projects I have seen. This has to be presented to a board of professional educators including the administrators at my school and other administrative people and experienced teachers. Anyway, I think it is working for me. Does it work for everyone? No, and many people are weeded out of the program. There are some teachers at the school who resent the fact that I have a job teaching without an education degree. (And with a Ph.D. I make more money than most teachers with just a B.S. Since teachers' salaries are based on a published scale, these people have a good idea how much money I make. Not nearly what I could make as an engineer...) If you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them.
  15. I am going to breakfast with some friends. I think breakfast out is such a luxury. Then I am getting a pedicure. After that we have some soccer games, depending on the weather Jenny in ATL mentioned in her post. We have dinner out with my DBIL and his wife at Rice Thai in Roswell. (Jenny, what should I order?)
  16. I use them to make a word wall. We write new vocabulary on them along with a small picture and put them on the kitchen wall.
  17. It is an '06 that we bought used. It had less than 6,000 miles on it. I think we paid $20,000 for it. We only have 4 kids, so the extra seat that the Sienna has is not an issue for us. We had a Civic that we loved for 15 years, which is why we went with the Honda. We simply did not fit in the Civic anymore after #4 came along. I know people who love their Siennas as much as I love my Odyssey. I don't think you could go wrong with either. My biggest problem with it is driving it around the speed limit. It has a lot of power, and I have a lead foot. And this is a quirky thing with me... Both windshield wipers go in the same direction. I know on some minivans they somehow go in opposing directions. It freaks me out. I know that is weird, but there you have it. My MIL's windshield wipers do that, and I cannot drive her vehicle in the rain. I find it too distracting. She drives a Dodge Caravan.
  18. A little hijack here... I have been wanting to go to the Shakespeare Tavern. Did you enjoy it? The drama classes from my high school went today and had a nice time.
  19. I wear a tankini because I can get different top and bottom sizes. But it is a normal suit. I don't wear a bikini because, quite frankly, I don't have the shape for it.
  20. I loved having my DH with me during labor and birth. I cannot imagine it any other way. He is my best friend and the person I want around all the time. I truly understand that there are people in this world who wouldn't want their husband with them, and I think that should be perfectly fine, too, although I wonder if it is currently viewed as "ok". I think it should be. My dad was the first father in the delivery room at Georgetown University Hospital. The year was 1968, and it wasn't the norm then. My mom's OB was out of town when my sister arrived early. She was supposed to be born at Hospital Center, but the doctor covering for my mom's doctor was held up at G'town, so they went there. The staff at G'town had not been trained on having dads in the delivery room, as they were not doing that at the time. But my mom was a nurse, and they gave her the professional courtesy of having the birth that she wanted-- no drugs, dad present, walking around, no c-section even though sis was sunny side up, etc. The poor nurses didn't know what to do with my dad. Mom says the nurses worried more about him than her. My mom loved her OB. When I went into preterm labor with my first (you try being pregnant, taking your PhD comps, defending your masters, and giving a talk at an major meeting out of town all in one week and see if you don't go into preterm labor...) my mom actually called Dr. Bru, a few years into his retirement, to make sure my OB was doing the right thing. My friends whose moms used Dr. Bru all have these kinds of stories.
  21. We have a thirteen year old, and I am sure he knows. But we also have littles, and we still pretend for them. My mom pretended for us until we got married and had our own kids. When my oldest was 6, a friend told him that Santa was really his parents. DS said, "I don't believe you. My parents are not that resourceful." I don't know where he got the word resourceful from. Now I did have to tell my three year old that Jesus, Mary and Joseph would not be attending our Baby Jesus birthday party in person. She was really disappointed. I don't think she gets it yet. I think she just thought they had prior obligations at church that evening.
  22. My dissertation also discussed percolation theory. I guess Danica and I have more than a love for math in common. I had our school library order the book this past fall.
