  1. Confession: I'm afraid I've threatened public school so many times in the past 2 months that my four year old now parrots it every time his brother doesn't do what he wants. As in "Give me those Legos or I'm sending you to public school. Do you want that? Do you?"
  2. An app for AAR/AAS that has the tiles (for the Kindle, please) so we could get rid of the stupid, ginormous board.
  3. We saw it and my boys (history junkies, both of them) loved it to pieces. My four year old has been playing Agamemnon and the Trojan War for two days now :)
  4. DH comes home today (he works out of town during the week) and everything is a mess. So we need to clean everything. Also, we need to pretend we haven't been at each others throats all week. So: Do our schoolwork, all of it. One full day is all I'm asking. Dishes Sort the laundry Scoop the litter box Clean the schoolroom. I don't know why it looks like a bomb went off since we didn't do anything this week, but it does. Make real dinner, left over pasta and roast beef isn't going to cut it. Try to pretend I care. Get stuff set up for our spring purge this weekend (Target: hall closets) Try not to cry
  5. We love the Little Travelers show (Amazon Prime, but maybe on YouTube too). Two little girls from America live in a bunch of countries around the world and learn about their cultures, my boys absolutely adore them.
  6. Meticulous, mostly. I design my own history, geography, and music and add a ton of books to our science. I do videos to go with every topic and I go insane when we don't cover something thoroughly. It is time consuming, but my kids seem to get things :)
  7. You've spent all week trying to convince yourself that taking your kids to see Mr. Peabody and Sherman is really enough school work for a whole week
  8. Going on day 3 with no sleep due to horrible allergies all around, but loafing is not an option so: Boys: Pretend to do schoolwork, mostly just grump at each other. DS1 has cooking and music classes, so heigh ho, it's off to school we go to spread the misery Wednesday is Grandma day so I can get stuff done since DH is only home on weekends Me: Want to sleep, instead will do giant pile of errands and chores Walk laps during classes Get a haircut, I'm starting to look like a castaway and besides I'm out of conditioner so I can't put it off any longer Grocery shopping since my children somehow managed to eat all of the food in the house since I went 3 days ago Get our pharaoh mask project ready to go for Thursday Disneyland is in 2 months. We are all desperate for a vacation now. Why didn't I schedule it for March? I can't even remember anymore. :confused1:
  9. Oh my goodness, still haven't been to bed because we are all about to die from horrible spring allergies. Coughing and hacking all night, so nothing will be done, but I'll pretend. Me: Do the dishes DH left in the sink last night after dinner, no I don't have to check, they're definitely there Do yoga to convince myself I actually want to get up DO NOT TOUCH THE GIRL SCOUT COOKIES, cookies are not breakfast Eat Salad Go for a walk or if that's not possible workout inside Take my vitamins Drink green tea with honey in it Pretend I'm not dying from this horrible chesty cough whenever the children are looking. DS7: Write his short story, no it is not as bad as a root canal, stop acting like it is Read, I don't know, something. Yes read something. Go to classes. Ugh. Some math clearly needs to be done. DS4: Do our reading, he's up to reading a few simple words himself now. Must not slack off. Give the poor kid a paint brush. He just wants to create, why am I always stifling him? Oh right, because it's a mess.
  10. We are doing Exploring Science from Elemental right now and recently finished up Intro to Science, both are excellent programs.
  11. My um, difficult, 4.5 year old loves both Reading Eggs and Math Seeds. The rewards system works really well for him.
  12. We've enjoyed Elemental Science (both their Classic and Sassafras) it's really gentle though, so it's best for kids who are super science-y to start with but it has been perfect for us.
  13. My kids need things in smaller steps, so we take the computer into the school room and watch her do one step at a time and pause the movie and do it before continuing on with the video. So far it's worked okay for my distractable boys (4 and 7).
  14. I did almost 10 years with Pacific Northwest Ballet, you'll find nothing better in my opinion. We are way, way up north from Everett now and I don't miss the commutes that's for sure but all of Washington is gorgeous and I will never, ever leave :)
  15. Anything religious, which I'm finding is pretty much everything. It even sneaks in where I least expect it. I also have found that I love the idea of boxed curriculum, but not the reality so in the future I will just say no to the box. SL MFW VP Abeka BJU WP TOG HOD Rod and Staff Shurley English Calvert K12 Oak meadow Saxon Math (my mom used it to home school me, I still get PTSD style flashbacks from it)
  16. Yeah, my impulses usually get the best of me. I buy writing programs every time one catches my eye and we hate them all. Unfortunately, even when I agonize over something it's not guaranteed to work. I need to figure out that just because everyone else thinks something is great doesn't mean my kids will.
  17. RS Math (though we've only done A, B, and C so far) Life of Fred SOTW using History Odyssey AAS/AAR (Pre-k on up, love it) History of Us (We use it with the American Girl books, it's a winner) Story of Science Sassafras Science (I don't love it, but the boys do) Home Art Studio, Creativity Express, and Meet the Masters for art. My kids think you can never have too much art :)
  18. Anything with workbooks Hooked on Phonics MBTP, man did we want to love it but no luck Every math program but RS Every writing program, period (yes, even Bravewriter)
  19. Wolves of Willoughby Chase Dido Twite The Egypt Game Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing books Ramona/Henry Huggins Indian in the Cupboard Harriet the Spy Pippi The Saturdays I have two boys who love books, I honestly haven't read them anything they didn't like :)
  20. We're doing Bio and Intro to Science (for my preschooler) currently along with Sassafras anatomy and my kids (7 and 4) love them. We aren't a very science-y family and the lessons and experiments are very simple and straight forward. I've tried other things and the experiments just didn't get done, but the experiments are so simple and straight forward with Elemental that it would be a shame not to do them. We bought the experiment kit to go with it and it made things even easier. I also love that they have an implementation schedule right in the book with several different options depending on how many days a week you want to do science. I have tried so many science curriculums and Elemental is the one that gets done. The supplemental reading suggestions are always excellent, and we use them frequently along with the encyclopedias they reccomend. I haven't noticed any bad editing in the Classic curriculum, but it's definitely a problem in Sassafras. It is so, so wordy and the science is just kind of thrown into the story. It bothers me for sure, but my kids love it so it can't be all bad. If you have kids who are super into science, Elemental might not be in depth enough for them but for my history loving boys it has been just right. My youngest loves the nature walks and notebooking (he's my artist) and my oldest loves that he can do most of the experiments on his own and the supplemental reading.
  21. Creativity Express for Art, we got it through HSBC and my kids are enamored. They also love Maestro Classics CDs, PetraLingua for French, RightStart Math games, and the Home Art Studio DVDs. We also found a real gem in Calvert's online supplement for Child's History of the World, they cannot get enough of it and we would do it all day if we could :)
  22. My guy liked the Beakman's World ones. They're on Netflix. We're doing anatomy too and so far we've found episodes for each of the systems.
  23. Second the Classical Kids. We pick one composer a month and check out a book or two (the Getting to Know the Composer series is great) and do a movie to go with it. My kids like the Beethoven Lives Upstairs movie and this set which our library has for free. My younger son really likes Maestro Classics cds as well which pairs classical music with children's stories like Peter and the Wolf (obviously), Carnival of Animals, Casey at the Bat, Tortise and the Hair and Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel (his favorite) and has a track that lets kids "play" along with the music. Finally, we love the Usborne Introduction to Music for a quick reference on instruments and composers. We're not an instrument playing kind of family unfortunately, but we've all been trying to learn the recorder together and while I'm not sure we're getting anywhere, it's been a lot of fun
  24. 2nd Grade- Hits: TT3 RSC SOTW1 using HO and all history really US history using History of Us and American Girl Books Life of Fred The Story of Science Horrible History, Science, Geography, and Math Sassafras Anatomy, can't wait to try zoology Geography units using the 39 clues books Tolerated: AAS/AAR3 WWE2/FLL2 Misses: MBTP-Wanted to love it but just didn't. We tried very hard though. Anything involving worksheets or any sort of writing. It feels like we have tried everything and nothing has stuck.
