  1. I'm jsut trying to learn if LfC is a helpful bridge between SSL, Minimus and LP. I've got someone who's too young for LP but I dont want to stop Latin completely, yet, I don't want LfC's way of teaching to contradict LP's . I dont think it will, but I'd like to not make a mistake I can avoid. ~c.
  2. and I was able to get on Discovery Education, Thank you ever so much for posting that info. I didnt' even knwo abou tit and I'm goin got post it to my local loop. You helped lots of folks with that post. If you want to PM me, feel free. ~Christine
  3. So cool you have a tutor for Latin. I'm jealous :-) I would have her choose one of Spanish or French. A musician friend says the 3rd stringed instrument is easy to learn. It's teh first two that take lots of time. So, We are continuing Latin and starting a MFL ( just light exposure) this year. I let them choose between Spanish or French. We listened to samples, looked at a world map where they are spoken. My smart son asked, "Which is more practical?" My smart daughter choose the one whose sound she prefers. I think Latin plus ONE MFL to start. I really think it will be easy to add a second MFL after one is mastered. well, you know what I mean, mostly mastered I'm sorry I can't see the original post as I write, what are you doing for writing? How about key boarding skills? We like Dance Mat here. ~c.
  4. Is LfC a workable transistion to Latin Prep? From American to UK noun case order. ( I , uhm don't actually know that that means,) will it be screwy to do a year or two of Latin for Children, then transition to Latin Prep? Are they compatable?
  5. My kids can't always do it in two hearings... okay, seldcom can... so I finally got over myself, took a deep breath and we just repeat is as many times a necessary. I love the WWE workbooks: open, read, do, done. ~Christine in AL
  6. I hadn't thought of Getting Started, I kinda like Getting Started in ( or with) Latin. After all he uses the little appreciated 2nd person plural that we have in English , y'all. And we could make a cd of the files. I have just gotten on Discovery Education streaming and there is a public television series for Spanish, . It' willl just take some organizing. It even has some supplimentary materials. And thanks, Truscifi.. :chillpill: was just waht I needed. ~christine in al
  7. We are dipping our toes in MFL. Still focussing on Latin, but want to get that second language " in their ears" before puperty. Suggestions for an introductory course? Must be self taught. maybe with videos, or audio, a bit of work book? Something between fluff and rigorous. Thanks. ~Christine in al
  8. You must have done a beautiful job of " momming", " Can we rent a movie" is a terrific response. Blessings on you and yours. Christine in al.
  9. Mine weren't ready for logic, ( Grammar Stage first,, I'm beginning to believe that) However, Song School Latin was a fun discovery, I'd drop the logic and add Song School Latin, Don't get teh Teacher's Manual, Just get the student book and make a copy of the cd for the car. I'd also probably do WWE. teeny weeny little lessons, oral in WWE 1. And as you are starting out, you'll not discover that you love it like we did in 4th grade and have to sort out what level to start. I personally think WWE is worth it just for the reading list alone. Get the workbook 1, you don't need the text. It's all in the wrokbook, open and go. I find FLL to be deadly repeative, But FLL 3 is a workbook format and has diagramming and has been a better fit. I'm kinda iffy about FLL 1 and 2, but you don't have to do every single lesson, I often get married to a curriculum and forget the child. IF you can skip as you need to, you might like FLL. We will be moving into Michael Clay Thompson . IF I had to do it again, I MIGHT, MIGHT just wait until 3rd and do MCT. for grammar. But then, we did some FLL, so I'm not sure if MCT is working so well because we are not coming to it cold. I dont' know. ESPECIALLY if you are going to do cursive. dd was ready early too, Take a look at Spell to Write and Read and couple it with Cursive First, they are made to go together. SWR, looks incredibly daunting, but once you get how to do it, if it works for you,, you're set with your spelling curriculum until the end. my 2 cents. ~christine in al
  10. Does anyone have any idea about shipping costs or options for Petit Pont French? They haven't answered my email. The nerve , hurumph. taking time off at Christmas. Has anyoen else gotten farther along the purchasing path and know shipping costs to the US? Maybe Ray could start getting stuff from them as well as Galore PArk :-) ~C in al
  11. YEAH Alabama Public Television. And yeah , you. Thanks. ~Christine ... IN ALABAMA
  12. I just remember hearing that. If I hadn't already gotten materials suggested from WTM, we'd be doing Elemental Earth Science. ( okay, that's funny , cause that's the volume Paige says was the hardest for her to write as neutral because she is a creationist. I think that lable is right, if not SO sorry Paige.) My worldview is diffferent than that, but I still would be using Elemental Science, and I plan to use it next year for Chemistry. ~c. in al
  13. Maybe try schooling somewhere else. Library? If there is a story time for your 4 year old, go every week and do work with the others at that time , then everyone get books. ( you are going to get educational videos especially for the 4 year old to watch during school time) If your mother and grandmother are supportive, that's great. Can they possible keep the littlest one busy for one hour a day ( reading the library books you got while you were there this week) while you help others. And I have exactly the same probelme sometimes with mine, and alot more resources... and FOR ME,,, I am just having to cowgirl up and be touch. good luck. ~Christine in al
  14. A set time to start, and a bell rather than me " telling " them. I think it's being " told " that's the trigger for mine. We have a Tibetan prayer bell and sounding it reminds me to relax and breathe and tells them that school has started. Oh, and if you exile them ( time out,, which I use sometimes) make sure that when they come back, you take a minute to hug them and welcome them back with full joy. And a new beginning. And not too much, especailly at 4. ~c.
  15. Writing with Ease is mostly for grammar stage, but might be of use to you. Since writing is a skill and needs to be built over time, you may need to work from his skill level ( beginner) rather than age jsut to start. I know you asked for outlining, and WWE doesn't do that in 2 or 3, ( that's as far as we are. But it still may be worth a look and perhaps a useful component. I hope someone with an older child answers you. I feel like I'm not much help. ANd if you've been here at all , many of us have a crush on Michale Clay Thompson's materials. you can look at those too. I am thinking of these as foundations, before you go to outlining. ~Christine in al
  16. 1. It is a " grown-up problem" and private. and 2. It's not about them, 3.you will be alright ( so they don't worry). This seems like a good opportunity to teach some real emotional health. You can teach then ( A. ) The difference between privacy and secrecy.( A secret is when you fake it, private is that you are not going to tell them the details. ) And (B.)What one does when one is sad: gets out in the sunshine, cuts back to essential work load, eats good food, and rest when one needs to. You can model for them good self care, honesty, privacy and trust. There might come a time when they are sad about something and start acting weird maybe it will be a private thing for them, but they will have seen how to keep something private, but not be secretive. If they come out and ask you what's going, I would definately tell them that you have a grown-up problem that is making you sad, but that you will be okay. I really think acting like nothing's wrong once they sense that it is, can scare them. Most people especailly kids worry, what did I do, and how does this affect me? ( Is someone going to die on me? ARe my parents getting a divorce? ) The label "grown-up problem " helped my kids tremendously when we had to end a toxic relationship with our best friends. i had to use it repeatedly and they got it that I wasn't going to tell them what was going on, and that it was, not their fault, not going to affect them. I am not saying don't listen to your answered prayer that you keep it from them. But there may be a really heathy way to do just that and take care of everyone. even you. I am sorry you are grieving, and I wish you peace. blessings Christine in al
  17. I agree that would be by for the best. What I would love is that from a child's birth one parent speaks one language, the other speaks the second language. totally. Kids in that environment tend to speak later, but when they do, both languages are there. boom. sigh. It really does need to be practiced, ,,,, I'm not fluent, I'm a Bhuddist French Speaker. There is no past, and no future, there is only NOW. I've seen postings that it is better to learn Latin before adding Greek. My kids are going to need to be homeschooled unitl they are 45 years old. I am glad Greek is working for you. What do you use? more curriculum to look at. ~christine in AL
  18. next year... Latin Prep for 10 year old and some yet-to-be-determined bridge Latin 9 between Minimus and Latin Prep) for dd 8 AND.. Petit Pont French, kind of for fun, for both. Starting now. We are still in Minimus and even have some SSL to finish. Is that insane? Adding French? now How would you schedule two languages so they don't get in each other's way. ~christine in al
  19. Has anyone studied the Magna Carta in lower grades? How did you do it? I can invent a wheel here, but don't want to re-invent one. KWIM ? ~c.
  20. I've been doing this::willy_nilly: thanks.. breathe... ~c.
  21. need it for science. Back to my foundations idea. ~c.
  22. This is a real question. How did your Grandmother study Latin? If my children could read anything in romance languages a half century after I'm dead... that's what I want for them. ~christine in al
  23. YIKES!!! Do I have this backwards?? I was going to do Latin up to High School then a second " living " language Here was my thinking: ( woefully ignorant) I was doing Latin first, you know: build the foundation of grammar, words having genders, blah blah blah,,, and since Latin spawned ( don't jump on me,, I know folks were not just grunting and pointing before the Romans invaded,,, but) my THIINKING has been that Latin is the Foundation of: French,Italian, and Spanish the dc could choose one of those and it would be easy with a strong Latin background,,, whatever THAT was. Well , Santa, Here's what I want: I want them to be able to read original works in Latin( secular classical), and be fluent in a second language. dd 7, ds9 will be completing SSL and Minimus this year and Iwas going to start Latin Prep with ds next year. Should we be doing our modern language now, ( grammar stage) and save the real STUDY of Latin for later? (Logic stage) We have MCT and will be dong the Latin roots of English bits. DS and I especially love discovering Latin roots of English or Science. And we'll be working on Grammar study in English with MCT and FLL. So do I make a whole NEW plan, have them choose a foreign language and we learn that. THEN we do Latin. This is a complete reversal of my plan, Does this make more sense though? Christine in AL
