  1. Actually if you want to talk wealth transfer, then the very wealthy have been a very large wealth transfer from the rest of us. The income gap has widened tremendously and it like having robber barrons all over again. What are you saying about the wealthy paying more in taxes ? That is is unfair or bad? Shall we just have folks starving in the streets or dying from lack of medical care? Shall we forget about public schools, public roads, public parks, etc? I am sorry but I think it is very fair for the very wealthy to pay more and it does not bother me in the least that the poor pay no or very little taxes since that is the way it should be.
  2. IMHO flat taxes are an awful idea since I think it is perfectly reasonable and fair for the well off to be paying more in income, estate, and capital gains taxes especially since all of those taxes are at historically low levels. And the fact that the top 10% of earners pay 68% of taxes and of that then top 1% pay 40% of all taxes is meaningless to me since these earners earn most of the money! They certainly can afford to pay modest increases in taxes. My grandfather who was very wealthy thrived and his business thrived when the highest income taxes were 70% and estate taxes were higher and capital gains taxes were higher as well. Our country can certainly afford to have the very wealthy (and I am not talking upper middle class) go back to the income and capital gains taxes we had under Clinton and then add a several more income tax brackets for the ultra-wealthy since it is ridiculous that the top bracket is $418,400! What about the folks who earn millions a dollar a year? They should pay more and it is totally fair IMHO especially since they often benefit form the work of others or from corporate welfare. I am tired of folks blaming the poor folks who do not pay income taxes as if it were unfair. Give me a break. They don't pay taxes because they are poor and in many cases struggling to get by! Oh and maybe if they were paid more and given more set schedules so that they could work second jobs then maybe they would be paying taxes. And maybe if we had unviversal healthcare they would be struggling less and making more and paying more!
  3. I know you and your ds really don't want a gap year but I wonder if your new location will be near fantastic internship or volunteer opportunities that he could do on a gap year? Where we live, there are really fantastic opportunities for internships and volunteering that colleges and employers would love to see, I think. I get it about being concerned about a gap year but it could potentially be a way for him to grow, maybe earn money, and maybe be more clear about what he wants to do if he does not know yet. IMHO if he really wants college like I did, then a gap year is not necessarily bad at all. My parents refused a gap year for me and I ended up not doing well in my first year of college and ended up leaving college and worked for several years. Then I cam back to college and did very well and went on to a great career.
  4. So with the 3 cups of water were some of the eggs submerged in the water and some were not? The recipes I have seen all call for steaming by putting 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water and then the rack with the eggs on top.
  5. I am surprised your eggs were not hard boiled with that recipe since I do 5 minutes on steam and then quick release and they are hard boiled. For soft boiled I have seen talk of 2 or 3 minutes. Heck I even saw a recipe with 2 minutes and not so quick release for hard boiled but I have not tried it yet.
  6. Yes you can soft boiled eggs: http://instantpot.com/steamed-soft-boiled-eggs/ I have used this recipe for hard boiled eggs with good luck but have seen a recipe for 2 minutes which I will hunt down: 1 cup water in bottom, rack, eggs 5 minutes steam button quick release Note most of the recipes I have seen suggest only one layer of eggs on bottom of rack and not to stack them. I forgot to add that I find that youtube has a lot of good recipes and you get to see how it turned out for them before you try it.
  7. Reg, what hard boiled egg recipe do you use? Just curious since there are several variations.
  8. Here is video of Flo Lum doing slow quick release with handle of mixing spoon at about the 3:30 minute mark in video.
  9. We do have 6 quart and an 8 quart which I bought on sale on prime day :tongue_smilie: As for doing a quick release very slowly Flo Lum (spelling?), instant pot guru on youtube does the very slow quick release by using the handle of mixing spoon to prop the vent in a slightly open position. I will try to find video.
  10. Here is the steamer basket we recently bought: https://www.amazon.com/NEW-DESIGN-Vegetable-Stainless-Accessories/dp/B00ZE2YUJG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1502465512&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=stainless+steel+steamer+basket+instant+pot&psc=1
  11. I am unsure if this would work but could be wrong since how would it steam effectively? We bought an additional 8 quart inner pot for our new 8 quart instant pot for those times when we wanted to cook one meal or dish after another without having to wash the pot out right away. I would look at the stainless steel steamer basket that open like a flower maybe.
  12. Most bean recipes I think call for natural release and if you did use a recipe with quick release I would do a very slow quick release by only letting the steam out very very slowly and stopping ans starting release if there is any sputtering. Also, putting a tablespoon of oil on top of the water helps as well as spraying the inside of the pan with oil on the bottom and about halfway up the sides. The make sure not to fill the pot more than halfway full. Instant pots do have some inner linings that are marked incorrectly according to Hip pressure cooking web site so to find the halfway mark use a ruler on the inner wall of the pot to find the halfway point for your pot. Sorry if I am redundant:)
  13. What does she mean by deformed? The inside or outside of the pot itself? Also, we do eggs all the time. I think you have to find the right recipe. As for OP, whenever we do a quick release for starchy things, I do a very slow quick release by just slightly turning the vent and holding it there to allow the steam to escape very slowly over about 5 minutes instead of just letting it rip. Also, if you had pot set a 0 minutes it sounds like 45 minutes was way too long and that maybe something was wrong. I know the pot can take a while to pressurize but ours usually pressurizes in no more than about a half hour.
  14. Look up Linus Pauling (spelling?) since I believe he took megadoses for decades. I would also check with your doctor too as to the safety. I have been doing about 1000 mg a day and think about more maybe.
  15. Anyone have luck with drying rayon clothes in dryer on no heat setting for at least a little while? We don't have a lot of places to hang clothes except bathtub and would like to avoid it if possible.
  16. Do you have to lay it flat to dry or can you hang it up to dry?
  17. Do you put in the dryer on low? Also have you ironed it without any problems?
  18. I bought some nice looking tops and pants at Marshalls made of a mostly rayon and spandex blend about 95% rayon and 5% spandex. I swore off rayon decades ago since it always shrunk on me even if I drip dried it. Well these shirts claim you can machine wash and tumble dry low so do you think I should? Anyone have luck with this? Also, the one cardigan says machine wash and drip dry but I am tempted to dry with no heat in the dryer. Has anyone had luck with that? Or should I just return the clothes? :tongue_smilie:
  19. I am late to this conversation... I totally agree. Here in the US we have kids turned away from organ transplant if they don't have the insurance or the money. My mother was told no chemotherapy or radiation treatments if she could not pay her bill even with insurance. Lastly, from what I understand it was not just a matter of sending the boy home. It was sending the boy home with a ventilator and other medical equipment in a futile situation. Excuse me if I am wrong since I am not totally up to speed here. Such a sad situation.
  20. This not necessarily true. My kid was homeschooled for part of kindergarden,1st, 2nd, and 4th grade only. The rest of the time he has been in school. He takes part in many adult conversations with us and family and has a lot of very informed opinions. I think what matters is whether the parents engage the child in conversations which we have done consistently over the years. I don't think this is a matter of how one schools your child.
  21. DS got a 5 on US Government and Politics, Congrats on all the good scores. Also, IMHO I think colleges will still be impressed with scores of 3 or above even if they don't give credit for a score of 3 since it shows the student is at least willing to take on difficult course work and helps validate student learning whether a student homeschools or not.
  22. I was hoping for both actually since I don't see a short period of exercise and having fun as mutually exclusive unless there were other kids there to socialize with. I messed up though in not telling him before we went downstairs:(
  23. If the adult child was dependent on you financially then I would consider cutting them off financially maybe. I would at the very least cut off spending money. I would first try to reason with them since I know first hand how bad smoking is and how it really hurt my lungs and I how I barely quit smoking cigarettes:( But I am not sure this is the right answer anyway since I am still muddling my way through motherhood :leaving:
  24. I actually do directly tell him to do many things in no uncertain terms but sometimes to not seem too dictatorial I try to encourage and what not. I am trying to make sure he gets choices too. I messed up yesterday though by not telling him before we went to the pool that I expected him to do 10 minutes of laps:( I did have multiple conversations with him saying that I would like him to practice his lap skills this summer but really that was not enough. I also get worried about asking too much since he does work very hard during the school year. We are probably butting heads a little more this summer since I am trying to increase his life skills such as cleaning, cooking, etc. and his independence abilities. During the school year since he works very hard do not ask much from in the way of chores except for taking out the trash and recycles and picking up clothes. Right now I have him cleaning the bathroom for the first time since he refused to straighten up his work desk just a little this morning which he pushes back on every single time. It is a skill I want him to learn this summer. Oh boy, this parenting thing can be tricky. I really hope I am not an ogre mom!
