  1. I forgot to add that I was going to consider at least 1 or 2 of these sorts of online courses for the trouble areas since money is an issue. Right now my kid remains in that charter school and it looks like he will be staying since the experience has gotten better:)
  2. I skimmed through this so my suggestion may not be good but I found my kid performs better for someone other than myself. I noted yesterday that RFWP has online courses now even with Michael Clay Thompson. Then there is G3 online classes which look interesting as well as WTM Academy.
  3. I am praying he makes it too. I worked critical care and pelvic injuries can be quite serious due to bleeding but folks can survive them. Thanks goodness is at a level 1 Trauma center. As for the update, I would not take it as preparing for his eventual death- most likely he is a national figure and I can see the family agreeing to this since the whole nation is worried:(
  4. I am also hoping that the resource do not have a lot of busywork. I would also consider online resources or apps:)
  5. Looking for a comprehensive vocabulary workbook with word and root study for SAT prep and college prep that is fairly concise yet very comprehensive with extensive words and roots studied (as in 5000 to 10,000 words). It could be less words though. I know SAT de-emphasized vocab but the current Barron's says that vocab is still important for reading selections. Also, I know the word list number I gave sounds crazy but Miller's Word Wealth covers 5,000 to 10,000 words in its book. I just wish it was workbook format. Also, I am hoping for more advanced vocabulary that ramps up quickly for a kid that has a pretty good vocab.
  6. MCT Word within a Word is tempting and I have used copies without parent book but I am thinking something a little more user friendly. Maybe I am wrong. Any thoughts on Word within a Word and different editions?

  8. Do you use paypal and how to you figure costs with price of curricula?
  9. We have yahoo groups and yes, now that I think if it we do have a facebook group too. They are not super large groups but I should definitely check their rules and look into it.
  10. Looks like our homeschool days has sailed past since my son and I find his school a good fit. He has just 3 more years to go :001_smile: I have various curricula I would like to sell and would like to find a relatively easy ways to do so. Are there any homeschool groups or conferences that allow you to sell used curriculum? Which venues such as Amazon, Ebay, Sell board here or others that you use? What are the ins and outs of selling curriculum? Any guidelines for smooth transactions and happy buyers and happy sellers? Lastly, some of it would be sets like Calvert 5th grade set and others would be individual books or Saxon math DVDs for example. I would be very appreciative
  11. I have heard that AP World History is a lot harder than AP US Government from my kid's teacher. I am wondering if a kid who did well in AP World History with 4 would probably do well with AP English Language. Any thoughts?
  12. I forgot to add that going without insurance risks going without care as well. Sure emergency rooms cannot turn you away for emergencies but they only treat emergencies until one is stable. They do not treat chronic conditions that are not emergencies. So if you need chemo or radiation or gallbladder surgery that is not an emergency you are out of luck unless you can cough up the cash-lots of it! My mom was told if she could not pay her bill even with insurance then no chemo or radiation! Then there are prescription drugs which can cost a ton of money without insurance. My meds for asthma would cost about a couple thousand dollars a month without insurance. If you cannot pay, then no meds:(
  13. As a nurse I disagree since even though the deductible is large, they would still get a massive discount on the cost of various services as negotiated by the insurance company. Also, $500 for a ER visit is a bargain really compared to full costs of a ER visit which can be thousands of dollars. Also, I took care of plenty of healthy people including children who racked up millions of dollars of care:( SO I would never do without insurance if I could help it.
  14. The problem with this is I think urns have features that are regulated I believe. I got that impression when my mom died.
  15. I bookmarked this excellent article from NPR on avoiding getting ripped off by funeral directors: http://www.npr.org/2017/02/07/504020003/a-funeral-may-cost-you-thousands-less-just-by-crossing-the-street Also. Costco last I checked sells urns and caskets.
  16. Actually I think this varies widely. Where we came from every funeral had food provided by the family.
  17. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Can you speak with a therapist and your doctor about this? Also, you mentioned some meds that may be helpful for your conditions that have potential side effects mentally. I am sorry if I am redundant here but it may still be worth asking your doctor about them and consider taking them since some of those black box warnings are not proven side effects of meds but are only coincidentally related. For example, I considered accutane for my kid and the black box warnings had me freaked out but I spoke at length with the doctor and did some online research and came to the conclusion that the serious side effects were not proven to be causally related to the med. The doctor who has tons of experience with this med has also never seen the side effects I was worried about and the studies I read regarding the same also said the same thing which was reassuring. Needless, he on the med and so far so good. Lastly, and again sorry for the unsolicited advice and probable redundancy, but have you done to a nationally renowned medical center and doctor for your condition if you can? US News and World Report has lists of the places and doctors. Or what about research studies? Sometimes doing this can be life saving or at the very least life prolonging with a high quality of life. I know going to a national renowned center and doctor did make a difference for my son and my mother even though they had access to good doctors previously. It is just that these national centers are often eons above the other doctors. You may be even able to get a phone consult. Again, I am sorry you are going through this. :grouphug: :grouphug:
  18. There is also putty for hand strengthening which can be found on amazon as well has hand grippers for strength training hands. I would also strongly encourage doing cursive, cursive, cursive! This helped my son.
  19. My kid's school uses Saxon too. They had the kids do every problem in the problem set and also had them correct every problem in the problem set too. They gave weekly tests which I recommend especially since Saxon has test booklets to use. My kid also uses graph paper and was not allowed to use a calculator until he was almost done with saxon algebra 2 and only for problems like Trig problems that absolutely required a calculator. The school has a great track record with Saxon using these methods.
  20. We just left Virgin Mobile and changed to Boost (both use sprint network). I was mad at Virgin Mobile since on their web site it says $5 off montlhly fee with autopay which they have not done for us. I call and they say it is only for iphone which is not specified anywhere on their site. This sort of discount is given by other carriers and I pointed that out and the supervisor says well "we are not them. We are Virgin Mobile." They acknowledged their web site is incorrect and did not give a hoot. Well Boost offers a family family which saves us on taxes since you only pay one tax instead of 3 times as much tax as you do with 3 of us without family plan. The coverage seems great for us on the East coast so far.
  21. First post on one of these threads. I had severe knee pain on and off for 6 months and I did see a doctor which I do recommend if it lasts more than a day or so or is severe or if range of motion is limited by it. I found glucosamine with MSM from Costco to be good along with tumeric pills (but you could make a tea or add it to your food too), I also used ice 3-4 times a day when it was bad and now use it at first sign of pain along with ibuprofen and rest and elevation. A note on ibuprofen is to ask doctor about it and I personally would not make a habit of taking it every day for more than 3-5 days or so since it can cause health issues. I also found mild compression with knee ace to be helpful during the worst of it.
  22. He has grown like a weed and is over 6 feet tall. His main issue is constipation and has been on miralax for a few years with 2 episodes of constipation so much that he was loaded to the gills and it caused abdominal pain. The tricky part is that he never really had the classic hard stools but had soft stools or mushy ones. With the miralax his stools were mostly loose but not watery. I weaned him off the miralax since I don't like the idea of being on it forever and the doc gave the OK which is why we do the water, prunes, bran, etc. His stools are still loose but I think it is from from going overboard with the constipation prevention stuff I am doing. I am trying to find the right balance so he ends up with soft formed stools. I noted though that kefir milk seemed to make him getting blocked again:( which makes me wonder...
  23. Do you use butter or any small amounts of dairy products like romano cheese and the like? or paneer with Indian dishes? I tend to use butter on cooked veggies? Any substitutes or do some tolerate butter?
  24. What does DPP stand for? What kind of milk substitute did you use? What about oats that are not specifically gluten free. He did have a celiac panel done about a year ago by ortho doc for joint pains which was negative for celiac.
