  1. I could I guess but was hoping for dairy but maybe I am brainwashed on dairy. I was making my own kefir and thought about goat milk keifr maybe? I am taking him to GI doctor in March.
  2. Have a family member with possible casein intolerance resulting in constipation. Had occasional acid reflux in past but is not an issue. Has episodes of frequent belching which is better with no or less milk. But it seems that when add kefir back in that constipation starts creeping in despite a regimen of at least 8 glasses of water daily, about 6 prunes daily, quarter cup course bran daily with either trader joe's high fiber cereal or oatmeal with flax and chia added in. Plus, he has about 3 fruits a day such as apples and oranges or berries. The has celery with humus daily or carrots. The for dinner there is usually peas or corn or broccoli/cauliflower or other vegges. I am besides myself. I want him to be able to have at least one glass of whole milk kefir daily. He does have 2-3 servings of organic soy milk daily. Anyone have success with goat milk? Any other suggestions?
  3. I agree doctors should have a way of being paid for end of life decisions counseling. Let us not forget that a patient never has to have this counseling as well if they choose not too and that they can say I want everything humanly possible done for me and don't pull the plug! My father wants this and it is his choice and ACA or the government does not take away that choice. I have not read all replies yet so excuse me if I am being redundant.
  4. Well medicare and social security had worked very well for millions and millions including my parents who would be up a creek without them. Then there is the decades of incompetence I have experienced in dealing with non-government health insurance. I have had to make appeals over nonsense many times to get run of the mill things covered and which were not experimental in any way. I have also had many insurance reps give me the wrong information on a multitude of times. The there is the premium increases and decreases in coverage we have experienced for the past 30 years long before the ACA. In regards to the OP's medicaid experiences, I believe each state has control over medicaid forms and application processes and over who is eligible.
  5. You can actually just buy the alarm system signs for lawns and window stickers from ebay to make it look like you have an alarm system. I think they even have dog recordings that go on automatically when motion detectors are tripped.
  6. Just got to this tread again. Thanks for the replies. Any books like this on US History, Ancient History, Middle and Dark Ages, Modern History too?
  7. In regards to cars and over-consumption of silly widgets as you say, I think it depends upon where you live. Where I live, many folks here value walkable communities and public transportation and car shares and bike shares and uber. My husband walks to work. I walk my kid to school or take public transportation. We rarely use our car and even thought of giving it up as many do here. OTOH I hear to many on the right especially give pronouncements against public transportation which is folly IMHO. Right here where I live, private industry is having having a windfall so to speak due to the extension of our metro system and little walkable cities are springing up around these metro stations. It is amazing to see. Many folks are sick of not having walkable communities . There are also a lot of conscious consumers here trying to reduce and re-use. I hope to see more of this in our country as well as renewable energy.
  8. I am glad to hear this. But I have heard loved ones on the right and also from those in national politics say that fossil fuels are the only way to go and that renewable energy is not worth pursuing at all since to it will never meet all of our needs. I disagree since to me I think it is possible and that naysayers against renewable energy are like those who said we can never fly or go to the moon. I have also heard from those on the right that government should never invest in renewable energy since only private industry should. Well I think our energy needs are national security needs. Also, our country actually already invest in fossil fuels so to speak via tax breaks to these companies. Additionally, since energy is a national security issue then I do think it is appropriate for government to invest in renewable energy too. Heck our government sent us to the moon and with it and all of the technology that was developed private industry and our people also benefited from this government investment.
  9. Let us say your proposition is right that CO2 has little impact and climate change is a hoax. That does not negate the fact that fossil fuels are not renewable in our lifetime let alone our grandkids and their grandkids lifetimes and is a limited resource. Secondly, extracting fossil fuels is known to very taxing on our environment by polluting waterways and our drinking water and the earth and by destroying ecosystems and even in some cases by causing earthquakes. The let us not forgot how burning fossil fuels does indeed cause air pollution besides CO2. Just look at the devastating poor air quality in China and India. Here in the US we once had major problems with air pollution as well such as in Los Angeles but thanks to the EPA that was cleaned up. So to me, I don't care whether you believe in climate change but really you cannot deny the devastating impact of fossil fuels on our environment which is a fact. I say our government and private industry should invest heavily in renewable energy which is better for all of us and our planet.
  10. Yes the article is correct but it tells the story of a woman who threatened a Sandy Hook parent because she believed fake news.
  11. Looking for actual history books that are exciting to read and read like a great novel for my teenage son. Anyone? I do have SWB's books already:)
  12. Here is another shameful instance of someone believing fake news: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/feds-woman-made-death-threats-to-sandy-hook-parents/2016/12/07/85fa3702-bc9c-11e6-ae79-bec72d34f8c9_story.html?hpid=hp_rhp-more-top-stories_no-name%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.0d3371cbd739 In fact an old friend of ours even believes this
  13. Megyn Kelly on NPR today expressed shock at how bad Breitbart has become under Bannon. http://www.npr.org/2016/12/07/504622630/megyn-kelly-on-trump-and-the-media-were-in-a-dangerous-phase-right-now
  14. It is about who IMO. Also, who is to say that a bakery owner or other business owner says that their religion does not allow then to do business with black people and therefore they should not be required to do so. I believe in our history, religion was used as an excuse for slavery and for segregation so this is not far fetched. And for heaven's sake it is cake. It is not like they have to stay and give their blessing to the couple or that there cake has an advertisement on it. This "it is against my religious beliefs" argument for denying business service is bogus and a danger to our civil liberties. Then there was the Hobby Lobby saying their religion did not allow then to offer insurance for birth control which was also ridiculous IMO since if we allow that then JW believers could say they do not want blood transfusions or organ transplantation covered or Christian Scientists could say they only want prayer covered and so and so forth.
  15. I have not read every post yet. Honestly, I don't understand it when folks say they cannot trust the mainstream media. The past 16 years I have seen the so-called liberal mainstream media frequently give softball questions at critical junctures such as to Geroge W. Bush during the lead up to the Iraqi invasion. Also, during this campaign season, these news sources gave a lot more press to Hillary's emails than to Trump's scandals according to media matters and I can attest that it seemed that way to me since I read NYT and WP daily. OTOH I think that that the NYT and WP still offer for the most part great trustworthy news stories for the most part and host an variety of opinions. http://mediamatters.org/blog/2016/10/21/video-how-false-equivalence-ruins-trump-clinton-news-coverage/214027 Also, Megyn Kelly supports the press and expresses a lot of concern over the bashing of the press: http://www.npr.org/2016/12/07/504622630/megyn-kelly-on-trump-and-the-media-were-in-a-dangerous-phase-right-now
  16. Yes but IMHO there are a lot of normal folks who believe fake news.
  17. I am against communism totally. But I have read articles about this all too real problem of many jobs at risk of being replaced including many professional jobs by robots. What are we to do? Let people starve? Let our economy tank since not enough people can afford to buy things? I also am for taxing the super rich and companies appropriately. Trickle down has proven itself to not work. I know my rich grandfather fared very, very well when tax rates were a good amount higher pre- Reagan tax cuts. And American fared better too under higher taxes. Now we argue about even paying for badly needed infrastructure. Trump's idea of the top bracket being $250,000 or so to a gazillion dollars and getting the largest tax cuts of all is ridiculous! I definitely think there should a multiple tax brackets all the way up to a gazillion dollars and that the likes of Trump should not get away paying zero federal income taxes for 20 years.
  18. My doc said in a pinch you could roll a paper about 6 inches long into a tube shape that has the same diameter as the inhaler mouth piece and use that as a spacer until you get a real spacer. Also I would definitely get a nebulzier and nebulizer meds. Having a peak flow meter is also useful. Plus if you are not onj maintenance meds then get them such as advair or flovent. Also, take plain mucinex to help prevent pneumonia when sick or having problems with mucus.
  19. Just like healthcare is unsustainable. We need universal single payer healthcare.
  20. I read an article recently how Walmart realized that if they pay a little more, offer folks paths to higher positions, and give them more stable schedules that they will get better results and greater customer satisfaction. Who would have thunk?!
  21. And what exactly are we supposed to do with all of the folks working service jobs who are replaced by robots? Let them starve in the streets? I get when a professional might be irked at a service worker making as much as they do but let's face it there are not enough professional jobs for everyone let alone service sector jobs. And for folks saying that McD's jobs are not meant to be living wage jobs and teenage jobs, I disagree since there are only limited manufacturing jobs out (although FTR under Obama 850,000 manufacturing jobs were created) and service sector is a big part of the job market. So I guess I am saying is that we should not diss service workers and begrudge them living wages. Oh and when robots do replace a lot of our jobs our country is going to have to figure out how to give a living wage benefit to those out of work unless we want to live in like Victorian times or something like that. Of course I don't see the right agreeing to that at all.
  22. I would consider waiting till your child receives his end of semester grades and leaves the school and then report so that this teacher cannot retaliate with poor grades. Maybe I am wrong but I would consider this.
  23. No hospital that I am aware of would ever do organ donation from someone not dead unless it is a voluntary living donor kidney donation or something similar. Now it is possible if her situation is grave in that there is little hope of recovery that transplant team may have approached family to broach the subject which is also approached with care but they would never take organs from someone not declared brain dead. Also, from what I recall there was very strict protocols for determining brain death such as 2 neurologists confirming death 24 hours apart. Also, the exam consisted of several indicators such as the absence of cough reflex, lack of pupillary response, no response to pain, failure to breath with the apnea test, absent gag and corneal reflexes, and absent oculocehaplic reflex and others. Plus they have to rule out other conditions that might cause abnormal results in neurological exam such as hypothermia, tranquilizers and other neuro condtions.
  24. Does it taste awful or is it the texture or both that bothers him? If the taste is not so bad, putting it in applesauce or pudding might work if it is a small amount and the taste is not strong.
