  1. We are reading The Secret Garden and I would love to serve something English. Growing up, my mother (who grew up in Berlin) used to poke fun at English food. What might be a good kid-friendly dish? Thanks
  2. The one I was worrying about was grey/blue. Thanks for the info.
  3. Does a person need to justify why they have given you negative rep? Alexandra
  4. He is lucky to have you in his corner. Not sure if anyone has suggested looking at some Cesar Millan videos...? CM suggests that most dogs do not get near enough exercise. He suggests 1 hour walking each day as a minimum. There are, however, certain ways to go about the walk that will help drain energy and establish you as the alpha. I would suggest you check it out. You sound like a very concientious pet owner and I wish you good luck.
  5. Ds (13 yo) has a bad cough because of this darn drainage. He is able to blow his nose but in addition it is going down his throat. I half-way don't believe in decongetants anymore but would love some suggestions if you have one. Thanks!
  6. I have had this program for so long and he is now where he might actually understand and retain the info. Would you start this program with this age child or would you go with something else? He does very well in all other subjects but spelling...sigh. Thanks Alexandra
  7. Mexican restaurants in Texas often make this on certain days of the week. A waitress told us to make this yesterday. Dh and I collaborted and we both felt very pleased with results. My picky son had 3 bowls! 1 lb beef shanks 1/2 onion (not cut up) approx 10 stalks cilantro (not cut up) simmer gently for 1.5-2 hours Discard vegtables and trim and shred or chop meat. Discard bones and fat. Add chunks of potato and carrot to simmering broth and cook until tender. Add zucchini, and corn on the cob (take the cleaned corn and chop each ear into 3 or 4). Return the beef to the soup pot and set simmer another 10 min. We also added salt and pepper somwhere along the process. I have never made a soup with such a delicious, clear and fragrant broth. The restaurant serves this with spanish rice and lime wedges.
  8. infections. Often what appears to be a bite is really staph. I am not talking about the scary stuff like MRSA, but it is something that you would be glad to have gotten looked at sooner rather than later. ALexandra
  9. I think it was the McDougall Diet. I think that she ended up having the surgery anyway but you might pm her to get more info. I think that Mcdougall is pretty starch-heavy and if you are interested in diet, you mightlook into something like Eat to Live. Abbeyej is the one to talk to about that. (It just goes to show you that I pay close attention to the diet threads!) Hope you feel better soon!
  10. What are you putting in your garden this month? I am new to fall gardens so I would love to hear from others! Thanks!
  11. Have you built a skateboard ramp for your kids? I came across plans in the Sept issue of Popular Mechanics. It is built out of plywood. Would plywood allow enough speed to make it fun? When we go to the skatepark, my kids skate on concrete which is fast (for better or worse:tongue_smilie:). I was just wondering if it would be worth it to build this project. My concern is that we would build it and the wood would feel too slow for my speed demons. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Alexandra
  12. My 19 yos really loves this book. I think we will do it in less than one year. I was wondering what folks have found to be a good next step after this book. I am hoping to maintain his wonderful enthusiasm! Thanks Alexandra
  13. My 5th grader is in 4A. He is doing great with it but he is a little unhappy with the number 4 on the cover. I think we will get to the end of 5A this year but still.... Thanks for any thoughts on this. Alexandra
  14. She really does well in front of the camera though as well. Cindy McCain is pretty as well but it is like watching a cardboard cut-out in my opinion. Palin is poised and people talk about her hair, cute family and personality far more than her voting record or views on issues. She is like the ultra-cool new girl that just enrolled mid-year.
  15. It seems like their alot of journalists on both sides that are foaming at the mouth don't you think? Is there a website or newsource that you like that is a little more scholarly and subdued, middle of the road sort of thing? I just want the facts (ma'am). :glare:
  16. If I have to think about it, I always throw it away.
  17. that I think Epsom's Salts is a miracle substance. I would soak in a hot water/Epsom bath. If you don't have any, I would use regular table salt. I would also for sure get shots but in the meantime you can soak that puncture wound.
  18. I had heard they were evacuating - with hope they were able to get to safety! You stay safe as well!
  19. 3) I think if we are going to place a high value on human life, we need to place a high value on ALL human life. This includes unborn children, people who can't afford their medications, soldiers who are dying for a dubious cause, even the lives of citizens in countries where we have decided to be an invading force....all life should be seen as precious and none of it should be squandered. Mr. McCain is not pro-life enough for me. If Mr. Obama would create an atmosphere that reduces the number of abortions performed, something Mr. Bush never accomplished, then at the end of the day who did the most to save the lives of babies? This the the circle going around in my tortured brain these days. I thought this was very well-stated. It often seems to me that the folks that feel so strongly about Pro-Life are also strong supporters of the the Iraqi War. Are unborn babies more precious than Iraqi citizens, or folks on death row? It would seem to me that Life being precious should be an absolute. I agree that all life is precious. Alexandra
