I have an elderly loved one who is having trouble keeping his bed dry at night. We have tried doubling the Depends and putting a pad underneath. He saturates his Depends and the pad cannot handle the overflow. He wakes his wife at 3 almost every morning! His glucose is fine btw (no diabetes). Ack! Sorry to ask this indelicate question but I would like to help (esp. her) with this difficulty. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I have asked this before because I think it so interesting. What habits help folks live the best quality of life during "the golden years". How does one avoid the classic ailments of old age? My 71 year-old mother works out with a personal trainer and is in great shape. However, she only started working out at age 60 - so I can't say for sure if it is the exercise... Would love to hear any thoughts on this.

Good grief - they cost $4-500. I was interested in replacing my blender and just about fell off my chair when I saw the price! Does this thing do the dishes and teach latin? Why are they so expensive?

For those that are purging plastic???
Alexandra replied to KristineIN's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I was thinking about how much plastic we have and whether I should toss the water bottles etc. Then I got to thinking about how all of our water comes in plastic pipes... Thinking about all this is a little overwhelming to me. -
We have had the 2nd grass fire within 500 yards of our house. The one last night burned about 5 acres! (Not any houses lost thank goodness!). It makes me think I need to put important papers in our safety dep. box at the bank. What should one do to be prepared in the case of a fire? We live in Central Texas and could really use some rain! Thanks!

I would imagine a teenaged girl might really love this sort of job. -
Our accountant filed an extension today without telling us. Worse, his receptionist said that the return was ready for us to come in and sign. My dh rushed to their office after work for no reason. We had given the paper work to them 6 weeks ago. We never oked an extension. We both got pretty irritated with the senior accountant (who was completely unapologetic). I later wondered if it does more harm than good to get good and mad when something goes wrong. I found myself worked up and for what? So when you get mad do you let everyone know? Do you find this effective? I sometimes feel that I am getting stepped on but on the other hand I wonder if that is just part of the human condition.

Anyone have palpatations at night??????

If you are drinking a little wine or consuming alot of sweets and carbs in the evenings this can do it as well. -
I came across this book a while ago and thought it was interesting. It is somewhat condescending but made me wonder about Asian vs American eating habits. How do the Asians stay so slim when they eat so many carbs in the form of rice? Is is all the walking? Do they have diabetes rates over there like we do here? I would love to visit the Orient and see (and taste) for myself some day!

I am trying to plan the dining part of our trip and was looking for suggestions for the evening meals. I think the daytime stuff we will just decide as we walk around but I would like to have a plan for the evenings. We would also consider a dinner show if that is a good idea. Any dining survival tips would be appreciated! Alexandra

My son's SP tells him to square his lips to pronounce this sound. I think that helps in that it prevents him from making a "w" (wabbit) but shouldn't she also cue him on tongue placement? I told her that my tongue arches or cups and touches the roof of my mouth. She said that it is not necessary to make contact with your roof of your mouth with your tongue. Any BTDT?

if you don't mind reading subtitles you might really like this German film. Not for the littles though. It is based on the American movie No Reservations. I liked it so much that I watched it 2 days in a row before sending it back. Lovely! -
Back from the dev optometrist today. Anyone...
Alexandra replied to NCW's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
it was making my ds sick. He literally became nauseated and was white as a sheet. We had an in-home program that cost $500-$600. I have been told that opthamologists are starting to come on board and offer their own version of VT but have to wonder about that. Since our VT experience, I have asked several MDs what their opinion is about VT and have never been offered an opthamologist's alternative. With that type of money being charged you really need to get a second opinion from a different optometrist. If you really want your child to go through VT ask for an in-home computer program. Also, you might try asking area opthamologists (MDs) for a program. If one is available, it stands to reason that it would have a better chance of being covered by insurance. It is depressing to think about how entirely uncharted this territory of reading and learning difficulties is. There are plenty of folks who are happy to take you money though - that is for sure. Best of luck. -
My DH, dieting together and my 888 list.....

Does that book allow any carbs at all? How do you (ahem) get your fiber? Lastly, do you find that going low carb makes you grumpy. Do you feel like posting a sample day's meals? Thanks! -
I arranged for some family members to have some work done on their septic systems and the fellow who does this work told me a couple of pointers on keeping your septic moving along nicely. Did you know that antibiotics can kill off the bacteria in a septic? (Aren't you glad I posted this after the dinner threads?!) He said that to introduce new cultures you can get a gallon of milk and allow it to spoil. When it has curdles, you can flush it down the toilet. So what do you do to show your septic that you love it? (My mil swears by yeast - me, I am going for the curdled milk). I am new to the whole septic system thing and would love to hear any wisdom on this subject.

We worry about sudden things...planes crashing, predators but not cummulative dangers like poor health habits etc. It seems that there have been studies on this sort of thing. I think that our brains process threats to our (and our loved one's safety) differently than the long term dangers (like environmental issues).

Sometimes I wonder how folks arrive at the decision to put a loved one in a nursing home. It seems like a really hard decision because how really do you determine "now is the time"? It is not like it is a glucose test or a cholesterol screening and over such and such number you need to get help. What makes people decide to do this? I would love to hear from people who have done this or who have some thoughts on this very difficult and painful subject. What event or behavior was the determing factor in your family member's case. At the time were you being proactive or reactive? Do you mind sharing? I ask because I will be making this decision in 2008 (pretty sure). Thank you.

If you work out to a video, what do you use?

Remember this from the eighties? It is dated looking but is supposed to work well. The disc is called " SuperCallanetics Ten years younger in ten hours".
